So..
I built a new system. Nothing huge. An old P4 3.2 prescott on a new dual pci-e board. Got a cool looking case. Its all lit up with LED fans and bubble lights on the front. 36 bux on ebay :) Put in a 8800GT (got it of Ebay.. $46 bux) and fired it up.. WOOHOO! ITS ALIVE!
Later.....
My Wife comes in my lab (aka our bedroom) and says 'Ya know, that would look way cooler in our living room than MYYyy.. POS eMachine'. (1st humm..) With the issues that her system has been having.. RRBs, BSODs and such, I decided to let her have this new 'pretty' system. (her RAC was sucky anyway on that old AMD 3500+ and besides.. I was having all the fun with CUDAs.. hee hee).
I took the system in to my lab.. err.. bedroom and took it apart. The PSU was so stuffed full of shilint and crap there was NO air flow. (2nd humm..) Ok.. easy fix. Took out PSU, took it apart and cleaned it right down to circuit board. Guess what? It fixed the BSODs and RRBs!! WOOHOO again!
I formated it *after saving all my gal's pics and such* and reinstalled win xp64 on it. Im thinking.. (3rd humm..) hey, this could be pretty cool.. I rebooted, got in to the BIOS and..... GRRRrrrr. NO overclocking functions. (4th humm..) BIOS UPDATE? I looked around and found out.. This old eMachine has a MS-7184 mobo. It is the OEM version of the MS-7093 and some have had good luck flashing the BIOS to the MS-7093s BIOS. (5th humm..) Piece a cake.. Download the BIOS, Burn to a CDR and presto! A PREFECT FLASH.. No errors! YAY! and WOOHOO AGAIN!
I take out the CDR and press reset and...
and...
and...
and...
(1st moan) :(
I KILLED IT!
NOTHING AT ALL.. With a slight tear in my eye, I got back on my feet and looked for someone that could un-do my doings.
Luckly, I found this guy on Ebay.. He only charges $5.76 total (thats if you send him your BIOS chip) to un-mistake my bios (and many others in sure :)
MORAL OF THE STORY..

You need to expand your "lab" to include necessary equipment to deal with these situations.

Clear everything off the bureau onto the floor to make room as your new workbench.

The wife will understand. Trust me.

Ha hahahahahaaaaa that's a good one!!! I have actually cleared out a small spare room, took some old cubboards from my parents basement, cleaned them, painted them to look new. And told the hubby aka Mike O that he can now give me our bedroom back and move his lab else where!!!! LOL I have no closet anymore as it has been taken over with boxes and boxes of computer parts. "His" side of the VERY large bedroom is his "lab" and I want it back. Now all I have to do is get him to hang the newly restored cubboards on the wall and he can move his lab bench to the official lab, which by the way is sitting in middle of bedroom (apparently his massive desk that we both USED to use is not enough room) I am sure once our daughter goes off to college in July he will want to over take that room as well. LOL

BTW the cool flashy case does look better in our living room then stuffed upstairs in his cluster mess where noone can see the pretty lights LOL

...that's a good one!!!

See, Mike? I KNEW she would like it.

I have actually cleared out a small spare room, took some old cubboards from my parents basement,

But is it fair to give him old and small stuff to work with?

"His" side of the VERY large bedroom is his "lab"

The way he makes do with what's available is downright commendable.
Bravo on the adaptability factor!!

and I want it back.

(tilts head in a caring way) We need to discuss this, ok?? No? Alright then, we won't.

He gives.... and he gives.... (chokes back a tear).

He has no room to complain. My wife's contribution to painting a room is "Honey, when are you going to paint that room?" :)

He won't have time. He took my advice and went shopping at the computer junk store. Wait till you see what he brings home.
(I bet you ask him if I actually did tell him to go shopping - "Did that guy on
the Internet tell you to buy all this crap??")

I shouldn't complain, it does keep him outta trouble. He certainly does alot for everyone. Just wish he would find a way to actually make extra money doing what he does for free. He enjoys it so much, would be a perfect world if someone could make money at something they love to do, instead of doing what they have to do to make money.
