From what I read about this ban it is all about spending caps. The amount of money A team can spend in A given year. Would't keeping A even playing field keep the sport competitive? LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |

Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen are first and second on the starting line in Monaco. I like it! Looks like Ferrari has finally started catching up with the Brawn. What is really amazing is less than 1/10th of a second between 1st all the way down to 8th. Jenson beat Kimi by just 2/100ths. That is close. |

Even more interesting to see whether "the rest" can catch Button/Braun. Its about time Button has a good car under him. Too bad about Hamilton's dismal year I was rooting for him to repeat. Ferrari can thank the Kimster for whatever they can get. |

Did all teams using the Mercedes receive the same quality engine? Offically they are. Un-offically is anyone's guess. But it would be hard to cheat on this issue. The teams were required to submit 1 sample engine at the start of the season to the FIA. The FIA can then test the engine you are running (at any time) againt the sample to see if you have made any changes. Only 1 sample Mercedes engine was submitted for all of the teams running it. So it should be the same engine. [note: Ferrari teams get last year's engine]. |

Did all teams using the Mercedes receive the same quality engine? It not a horse power thing. It's traction and drag. Ferrari has more horsepower than any of the engines (only about 10hp), but they have not been able to use it. There was one year when BMW had over 70 HP more than any of the other teams, but it didn't help. |

Did all teams using the Mercedes receive the same quality engine? I have noticed this year the front wing is longer than last years front wing. It will be interesting how far the F1 teams will modify the rear Diffuser to achieve more down force. I see most teams do not use KERS does really had that much weight to the car or is the cost the factor? LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |

The dimensions of the wings are dictated by the FIA. What you do within the dictated dimensions are pretty much up to you. As far as KERS goes weight is not a big issue. There is a minimum weight and the cars actually carry ballast to bring them up to the minimum. The factors that the teams have to consider are: Cost, safety and reliability. Notice that only the high budget teams have KERS. What it has cost to develop I don’t know, but it’s been in the millions. There are two ways to achieve kinetic energy storage. Mechanical and electrical. Mechanical generally involves the use of a flywheel. However, the rotational forces of a flywheel tend to resist changes in direction. So they are not a good choice for F1 cars. I understand that Williams is working on one, but all of the others have gone electrical. If you recall electrical theory, the higher the voltage the less energy is lost in storage and transmission. As a result the KERS systems use very high voltages. I have not been able to determine how high, but I know it is sufficiently high that it could kill someone if it shorts out. I forgot which team but one team lost several men when a system malfunctions during off season testing. The last issue is reliability. This is new technology, each of the teams that have KERS have had failures. In Spain Kim’s system failed after only a few laps. McLaren’s systems have had several failures. The natural result is that most of teams are waiting to see if KERS really gives a competitive advantage before spending the millions required to develop one of their own. So far I have not see a great benefit. In Spain I saw it used to defend and In Monaco I saw Hamilton use it to pass the slower cars. However, once he caught up with the faster cars it did not seem to help. Bottom line, the jury is still out. |
