Here's what I have 2/23/2009 7:38:21 AM||Starting BOINC client version 6.4.5 for windows_intelx86 2/23/2009 7:38:21 AM||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 2/23/2009 7:38:21 AM||Libraries: libcurl/7.19.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8i zlib/1.2.3 2/23/2009 7:38:21 AM||Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC 2/23/2009 7:38:21 AM||Running under account douginwood 2/23/2009 7:38:21 AM||Processor: 2 AuthenticAMD Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 180 [x86 Family 15 Model 35 Stepping 2] 2/23/2009 7:38:21 AM||Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 3dnow mmx 2/23/2009 7:38:21 AM||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional x86 Editon, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00) Now just about every WU won't start automatically. I have to close BOINC from the system tray and restart it for the WU's to start. Hence I'm loosing a lot of time. Ideas? |

First things first. If you don't want to run AP WU's please head to your preferences page and uncheck run AP and run other apps with MB runs out. quitting a WU is wasting your time and others. second, describe the "WU's won't start on their own." Are the WU's running but not in the order you expected or are you having a situation where no WU will start? ![]() In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

First things - done - oops. As to the WU's - they are selected correctly in that it chooses the earliest deadlines to start on - but when I check it, it'll show hours of time spent for 0% progress. I exit BOINC from the tray and restart it and it'll choose the same 2 WU's to work on and after ~20 seconds the progress starts to register. It then completes in ~4 hours, picks the next WU in sequence and starts the time, but progress sits at 0% until I restart BOINC. |

Ah, the stock client-AMD bug. The quickest way to solve the issue is to install a optimized client on the machine. Only caveat is that you are responsible to update apps as needed instead of having BOINC do it. This one is just multibeam.. Windows 32 bit AK v8.0 SSE3 (AMD/INTEL) ![]() |

I am seeing something similar on one of my pc's: WU's get stuck somewhere in the process and the progress counter remains at the same value even though the CPU usage is still at 100%. Restarting Boinc usually helps. I have isolated this problem as being caused by Symantec Endpoint Protection that is installed on this pc, and before this, I had the same issue with a virus scanner. You may want to check if a virus scanner is causing the issue. Seti@Netherlands website |

Thanks for all the replies Glad to find out it's an AMD thing and not just me I went here http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php?module=Downloads;sa=dlview;id=118 and dloaded the file. Followed in instructions, restarted BOINC and got this: 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Starting BOINC client version 6.4.5 for windows_intelx86 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Libraries: libcurl/7.19.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8i zlib/1.2.3 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Data directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Running under account douginwood 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|[error] State file error: missing application astropulse_v5 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|[error] Can't handle workunit in state file 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|[error] State file error: missing application astropulse_v5 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|[error] Can't handle workunit in state file 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|[error] State file error: missing task ap_03ja09ab_B5_P0_00270_20090221_28472.wu 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|[error] Can't link task ap_03ja09ab_B5_P0_00270_20090221_28472.wu_3 in state file 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|[error] State file error: missing task ap_11ja09ae_B6_P0_00129_20090222_08393.wu 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|[error] Can't link task ap_11ja09ae_B6_P0_00129_20090222_08393.wu_0 in state file 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Processor: 2 AuthenticAMD Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 180 [x86 Family 15 Model 35 Stepping 2] 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 3dnow mmx 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional x86 Editon, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00) 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Memory: 3.00 GB physical, 6.86 GB virtual 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Disk: 176.53 GB total, 102.98 GB free 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Local time is UTC -6 hours 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Not using a proxy 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||No CUDA devices found 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||No coprocessors 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|URL: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/; Computer ID: 3388652; location: home; project prefs: default 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||General prefs: from SETI@home (last modified 13-Feb-2009 07:48:37) 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Computer location: home 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Reading preferences override file 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when active to 1535.74MB 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Preferences limit memory usage when idle to 2764.33MB 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM||Preferences limit disk usage to 0.10GB 2/23/2009 12:20:25 PM|SETI@home|Restarting task 16ja09ag.1348.21602.13.8.227_1 using setiathome_enhanced version 603 2/23/2009 12:20:25 PM|SETI@home|Restarting task 16ja09ae.23778.21340.11.8.205_1 using setiathome_enhanced version 603 should I have dloaded the SS2 application instead of the SS3? |

Get CPUZ installed it will tell you what instruction level your CPU can handle. As I recall you weren't wanting to do the AP so installing an optimized ap that doesnt include the Astropulse Ap will keep you from getting anymore. I don't see the app_info being identified. make sure you have it installed in your C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC file. Once you install it make sure you restart boinc. You may need to kill the boinc process in your task manager. once you restart it should show your "app_info.xml found" when it starts up. You will also see the AK seti app running in your task manager ![]() In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Richard, he was aborting them until Skildude told him how to shut them off. He might have had a couple still on his machine. ![]() PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

Just saying this from the perspective of a recent returnee to SETI, but it's kinda confusing trying to figure out WHICH client to select and run. Eventually through trial and error I got to the right place, but it took a lot of scrolling and wading through things. I'm still not sure if I'm running the 'right' client on my machines, but at least i'm not throwing comp errors. Anyway, saying "you should run such and such" oc is one thing, trying to find the 'right' one is another thing entirely. |

Get CPUZ installed it will tell you what instruction level your CPU can handle. Good advice, but a bit late in the day. As I recall you weren't wanting to do the AP so installing an optimized ap that doesnt include the Astropulse Ap will keep you from getting anymore. It would have been kinder to wingmates/project to finish off work in progress first. I don't see the app_info being identified. Look at 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform Once you install it make sure you restart boinc. What do you think that log was all about, then? You may need to kill the boinc process in your task manager. NO. Don't. Never. Learn how to manage services if you ever feel that urge coming over you. once you restart it should show your "app_info.xml found" when it starts up. As it did. You will also see the AK seti app running in your task manager Good tip. |

oops about all the msgs. - I meant to copy selected not copy all. CPU-Z tells me under "Instructions" MMX(+),3DNow!(+),SSE,SSE2,SSE3,x86-64 so I think the SS3 app I got was the one I should have. This line: 2/23/2009 12:20:24 PM|SETI@home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform matches the instructions in that "BOINC will tell you that it found app_info.xml and is using an "anonymous platform". So I think I'm good to go as Rich said. I'll see if my ~4hr/WU times go down. and .... catching up with the posts as I was typing ..... I checked and don't have any AP WU's in my cache. Actually haven't got any for a week or so. I've had CPU-Z installed for a long time, that's what indicated to me to get the SS3 app over the SS2 app. The error msgs threw me and made me second guess my choice. AK_v8_win_SSE3.exe is running under my username in the processes list in task manager. When I've exited BOINC it's always been via the 'exit' in the system tray. |

2/23/2009 7:38:21 AM||Processor features: fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 3dnow mmx BOINC only reports what Windows tells it about - and Windows XP only knows about SIMD up to SSE2. Running CPU-Z would have been ideal - but I trust Arkayn to have picked the right one for an Opteron 180. And I swear I saw log entries for a successful restart before Doug edited them away! ('missing application astropulse_v5' is nothing to do with SSE2/SSE3) You didn't tell us you were running Astropulse as well! Maybe you should try a combination AP+MB optimisation next time. Ah, that must have been another thread - no mention of aborting in the opening posts here. The AP optimisation cuts processing times by a factor of four on Intel CPUs: AMD CPUs are notoriously slow with the stock app, so the AMD speedup could be even more. If Doug had chosen/been advised about a combination pack, he might have been so impressed that he felt able to reverse his 'opt-out' decision. |

Yeah the only reason I wasn't doing AP WU's was the overly long time I knew AMD's took that would slow those WU's down for my non-AMD wingmen. You did Rich - I trimmed out a little much to keep the reading/scrolling down to a easier amount. Sorry. I put them back :-) 2/23/2009 12:52:21 PM|SETI@home|Started upload of 22ja09aa.10498.2526.6.8.253_0_0 2/23/2009 12:52:27 PM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site 2/23/2009 12:52:28 PM||Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down. 2/23/2009 12:52:28 PM|SETI@home|Temporarily failed upload of 22ja09aa.10498.2526.6.8.253_0_0: HTTP error Looks like a little server glitch ? Y.... I put the OC client for 64 Bit Multi-beam AK-V8+Astropulse_v5.0 Science Apps on a phenom this weekend, seems to work. You to scroll down and hunt for it, that page is confusing. http://lunatics.kwsn.net/ |

If there'e an AP/MB combined opp. app. for AMD point me at it ;-) Lunatics (myself included) have been struggling to find wingmates to validate the new AP_v5 r112 - that's the one to run now to match the stock v5.03 We were planning to release it today, but it sort of sneaked out over the weekend under cover of the network issues. The individual AP apps are there, but I can't find a combination build for AP+MB yet either. Perhaps best to leave it a few days while all the dust storms die down - see how you get on with just the MB for now, and then you can keep an eye on the "won't start automatically" problem (which is, after all, why we're all here) on its own. |
