Message 34107 - Posted: 8 Oct 2004, 14:40:34 UTC

I'm amazed that so much persons are having upload/download problems. I'm connected via cable/broadband (permanent) and do have no transmission problems.
BOINC/Seti permanent Network Access.
Credits are rolling in, but at very intermittent intervals and in very fluctuating amounts. Sometimes a couple of fivehundreds to a couple of thousends then again very low amounts. I guess this is still caused by the backlog going down and up again and then again going down, sort of hickups when the drives have problems to follow up the demand???

Greetings ;-))
(Next week five machines extra - yippie...)

Not unexpected if my theory of a bad WU batch is accurate. The default BOINC setting for contacting the server is 2 days, and I suspect many users haven't changed that setting. On average, these people would have anywhere from a few hours to two day of WU, and if Seti pumped out bad WU's for a day, they would have a pretty good chance of downloading a pile of bad WU's....

Yes, I think you're right. Perhaps I'm not confronted with this problem because I work in the same context as you, cache for all set to 7 days and already filled up, so we don't have noticed this hickup but...are these WU' coming back??? if so we could get our share of "the plague".

We do have very good chocolates over here - I like them, more than credits -,
What do you think of the following :

For every 10 bad WU's Berkeley sends one? tranquilizer to sedate overuse of Seti... LoL

Well, I'm on dialup and contact daily. I haven't had any upload problems since they fired things back up. Maybe I'm just lucky and have missed the "bad" WUs?

A recent WU.

I have 5 machines crunching, 4 local and 1 remote. I have not been able to check the remote box, but none of the 4 local ones have had any upload errors. I have had tons of download errors, and some temporary upload failure(all were eventually successful), but no permanent upload errors. All of my crunchers are running and connected 24/7, even during the outages. All of them have the cache set to 5 days. This whole situation seems strange indeed.

I got the same problem on one of my workunits so far.. failed to upload.
Error on file upload: file_upload_handler: no filename; nbytes 8336.000000
permanently failed upload of (workunit name)
Giving up on upload of (workunit name) server rejected file

My client tried to upload once, I right clicked the "retry now" and it tried once more, and then proceeded to remove the workunit.

This is what I'm getting on all of my machines today. I guess we are just not going to get any credit for any of the WU's our machines finish and try to upload today. Guess it's time to reattach to CPDN and come back to Seti some other time.

There seems to be at least 4 threads all saying the same thing. I think there must have been some bad WU's released on the 5th or the 6th. I had 2 machines that were having problems. I reset both of them and I haven't had any more problems. Of course I don't really know if that was the case because none of the Admin's have said anything about this problem even though there are 4 threads saying they have problems.

This morning a hardware failure caused one of our storage arrays to require resetting. Downloads will be temporarily halted until the drives have completed re-synchronizing. This should be complete in the early evening hours (Pacific Time).

I have previously had WU's from O4my04 with no problem.

Now comes the crunch I have had three power failures today. Two because thye coffee make blew (quite a bang as well and I had not got my caffeine). That was around 10:00 UTC. Then sometime between 14 and 17:00 UTC there was a local sub failure. None of the logs show an unexpected shutdown. Now the question is was it the power failure or a file failure? If it was the power failure then why didn't the client pickup from an earlier checkpoint. (I am sure I read somewhere that is what should happen but I may be wrong.) I know outages can do some weird things and no I do not have an UPS (can't afford it!) but the supply is well filtered. Not over worried, just curious!

Thanks

David

I think I had only 1 WU go thru yesterday, message is gone since I shut the PC down overnight, I don't keep a large cache of WU's, only one sitting ready to go when the other completes.

That's another 11 hours of crunching down the drain...
