Well, after the previous posts about Yes and Traffic, I dived back into my archives. The old gear was dusted off, candles were lit, chants were made, and offerings burned to the lesser god Vinyl. It was worth the effort.

The early Yes left me speechless. Full report to follow when I recover.

For Traffic, I played Low Spark of High Heel Boys, 1971, perhaps the best of the second (or was it the third?) incarnation of Traffic. The second side really touched me. Rock and Roll Stew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQItrDoO_KI moved me to share with you. This is truly world music, before Capitol W Capitol M World Music came along. You start with the freshness of the New World addition to Traffic, Rick Grech and Jim Gordon (before he went kookoo), on top of the Old World richness and class of the original Traffic, and then underlay it all with the really really old world rhythms of Reebob Kwaku Baah. This is where the modern world should be going, a blend of the best of all worlds.

Two other tips to really enjoy this.

First, PLAY IT LOUD on proper sound gear. YouTube and cheesy computer speakers don't cut it.

Second, Nederberg 2007 Shiraz. This is a still a real, peppery Shiraz, not the watered down crap you get from all the "we make a Shiraz too" wannabes these days. Goes well with rare beef, and rock and roll.

Seeing that there is a glaring lack of metal on here, aside from the one post I previously entered, I'll add another one of my favorite bands to this ongoing list.

I remember having a discussion in college back in 99 with an old dorm buddy about music. He brought up the fact that he liked Tool because of their complex music, which brought forth a chuckle from me. Inquiring about the laughter, my friend asked what it was all about and I told him that he needed to broaden his horizons if he believes that Tool is complex. He then proceeded to play me a few Tool tracks I had already heard before and I sat through it to appease him. Upon completion of the tracks, he then turned to me and questioned how I can find Tool to be juvenile in terms of complexity and that was when I played him the track below:

I explained to him that this was a progressive metal band called Meshuggah whose complex polyrthythmic writing was legendary. Since he had been playing guitar for quite some time, I asked him to listen to the track and attempt to figure out the picking pattern, which he brutally failed at. I asked him to pound out the drum rhythm on the desk, couldn't do that either. Then I told him that this is one of their more straight forward and simpler songs...

Dream Theater

If there ever was a band that had a genius at each of it's musician's respective instruments, that band would be Dream Theater. Their core (bassist, drummer and guitarist) all met at Berklee College of Music and have been making some of the best progressive rock/metal since.

-Mike Portnoy, Drums: Mike is easily one of the best drummers alive and the best for sure in rock. Peart fans hate hearing this but it's true...

-John Petrucci, Guitar: John is a virtuoso unmatched by many. Good enough to make it onto the G3 tour, John's ability to pick just about every note in a solo (rather than relying on a legato style hammer on/pull off attack, ala Satriani) is right up there with someone like Paul Gilbert.

-John Myung, Bass: Myung plays bass with such accuracy and speed that you'd think he has Buckhead sized fingers, but no, regular fingers in the realm of bassists. For some of his stuff, I wind up having to pick my 6 string bass as I cannot move my digits that fast.

-Jordan Rudess, Keyboard: Asinine speed, limitless knowledge and great theory application. Jordan can get a bit nuts if you let him, as shown in the middle of "Dark Eternal Night" when Dream Theater breaks into a silent movie score, but you gotta take the good with the bad.
