... The minimum RAC to post is quite low, intended simply to keep spammers out. IIRC it's 1, if so you'll still be able to post for about 13 weeks. Joe |

Here in france it costs €0,1106 during the day and €0,0673 for 8 hours during the night. I hope they wont increase that, but if they do that'd be pretty unfair as 95% of tehir electricity comes from nuclear or hydro plants.. |

Currently I pay € 0,0522/KWh, IMO a rather fair price. Regards Kurt |

I often think of the cost of crunching and my method is turn off heat and use heat produced by crunching to warm house.Of course this means cutting back in summer but this time of year it works fine, not sure but I imagine most energy used on pc turns to heat. [edit]maybe hookup a thermostat, have pc run only till upper temp has been met.LLL[/edit] |

Nowadays i pay almost EUR 300 a month yust for electricity and gas. Just for 2 SETI systems, my 3 childrens computers and the rest. I'm lucky i can affort it (at the moment). Even I checked many electricity consuming devices around my house to have an idea of where al those kWh's were going. I can understand your decision and hope you will still enjoy the BOINC community who are all trying to survive this (energy) crisis. Hope you wil hang around here in the future. |

By the way, actively crunching PC, especially if you use GPU, really is a good way to add some heat to your room :) I sit near the window and when we had -20C here in Moscow I really enjoyed warm air coming from video card :) |

The heating here went out over New Year and due to the ineptitude of the service people they didn't get someone to us for a couple of weeks. Even then the service guy was expecting us to ring him to make sure it was okay for him to come around. My room is normally around 70F with PC on and radiator hardly comes on. It got down to 62F but it was by far the warmest room in the house. My folks were jealous |

Everyone that is using electricity for heating should leave the PC running anyway in the cold season - the heat in the house will cost you the same if it is produced by your PC or by your electric furnace. The guys that have heat-pumps (theoretically more efficient than regular strip heating) - if it is very cold outside you should stop using the heat-pump part anyway, because it is not that efficient when the outside temp is very low and it wears on your compressor for nothing. If your heat is gas-provided, the heat from the PC will decrease the gas consumption, now it is a matter of what's more expensive, the gas or electricity, and if you are willing to foot the difference. Same goes if you are using some other kind of metered heating agent. Heat MUST be made in the house somehow, and that will cost you money anyway. Basically, shutting down seti@home in winter is not a gain, will not save money as you think. In the summer that's different, of course. I do slow down my crunching in summer to save on A/C bill. LE: In the winter I miss my old P4 Prescott CPU. That was a real heater, not the whimpy C2D :) |

Wow. Great idea. BOINC team should develope crunching rig with high heat production and start selling it with a motto "Don't waste power - crunch for heat!" |

Well, the same goes for everything that you do on the computer - the electric power is transformed in heat (and just heat) by any PC. Boinc/seti just bumps up the consumption. And any heat in a cold season add up and lowers the intake of heat from other sources. I guess it is working ok for you in Moskva/Moscow? :) |

Sorry, but I do not agree with you here. We do use gas for heating the house. The larger PC, the one I am using now, is in a former small bedroom, nowadays used as office. We never have the heater on in here. I am the only one using the room and I don't like heat, since I never feel cold. Call me strange (please do) but I never feel cold. The other (older) computer is placed in the attic, just underneath the roof of the house. Another place we don't need heat since we seldom come there. Also warm air, as far as I know it, goes up, meaning it will warm up the roof. Don't need that. Yes, I know what you are saying, and you are right about this for most of the people. When you place the computer in the living-room it will help the heater to warm up the room, saving gas. But for me, in my situation, I doubt if it does any good. I think I only pay extra for electricity. ______ DeMus |

In the mean time I downloaded a program called Boinc manager and an optimized application and the computer is crunching again. This time on 2 of the 4 cores since I want to have some cpu power for myself. I do switch of the computer when I'm ready doing the things I want to do, but when the PC is on, Boinc is running. Happy now? I do want to keep in touch and since it is impossible to do once my RAC is zero I decided to start over again. On a small scale, 2 WU's at the time, only when I use the computer, no more racing to get a higher RAC, a higher position on the list, just going back to the basics when crunching was still fun to do. Several years ago I started using the classic seti on a pentium 2-333MHz computer. Seti ran only as screensaver and would stop once I pushed the mouse around a little. Then for several minus 1 year I stopped completely. During this last year, using Boinc, and seeing my results rise and rise, it became a race against the others. I was looking in the score lists to see how many people I could pass in the next day, who had about the same amount of credits, but a lower RAC. I will not do that anymore (I hope). I will give some CPU power to Boinc and once it is time to stop, I stop. Happy now? Let me here it. O yes, the rize in electricity prizes. I never wrote how much it was: Old prize at night € 0.0403 / kWh, during the day € 0.0848 kWh New prize at night € 0.0576 / kWh, during the day € 0.1086 kWh A rize at night of 142% and during the day 128% Is this madness or what? Compared to some of you it is still low, but this raise is something we can do without. Also because it is pretty sure the prizes won't go down once the oil prizes stay "low" for a longer period of time. After a while we are "used to it" and the electricity companies have their high profit. E.T. when you are reading this: I do all of this to find you, so show yourself! ______ DeMus |

I know this is an obvious thing, but I now turn off the monitor and speakers while I'm not using the 'puter and it's just crunching :-D |

Well, you don't heat that room... do you keep the door closed or cold air can move from that room to the rest of the house (I have a unit that circulates the air in the house for A/C and heating)? If you keep that door closed and in that room it is the same temp like outside, yes you are right. If not, the heat generated from PC helps with the heating. Then, it's another thing... a cold attic will "suck" faster the heat from the house. Basically you DO heat anyway the attic too with your money. The amount of heat depends of how much thermal insolation you have on the attic floor. So heating the attic will decrease the need of heat in the house. It's not a straight 100% help with the house bills, but it is. Move that PC in the living :) PS: I am just giving some theoretical considerations. Do not take it any other way... |

Hi all, First time post, have been lurking for quite a while. About 10 years back I I purchased a wood pellet stove to heat a hard to heat room, Along the way I came across a site to compare fuel costs. As long as you can supply the fuels cost and the appliance's efficiency, you can determine the cost per BTU that you get out of the appliance. The site is: www. pelletheat. org/3/ residential/ compareFuel.cfm (spaces added intentionally as I do know what will happen being my first post). If you know how many watts per hour your computer(s) draw, you can calculate how much more you will pay a month. Yes 42 and 28 percent IS a big increase, but what is the percentage of your computer in comparison to your total usage. I don’t need to know the answer, only you do. As far as my cost, it is about $.22 US per kwh.(it was $.13 per kwh several years ago). (and that is winter rates, add .05 for summer rates) A 42 percent increase will be around $15 a month on top of the approximately $40 for the pc. ($240 per month electric bill per month). It is all dependent on how much you can afford and how electricity much you use. And, oh, by the way, I have a slower cruncher(1 core, HT, ~14 credits per hr) and only used it several hours a day, but recently it is almost 24/7 just like you (I may be time to get a faster cruncher, just need to convince the wife).. |
