Okay, I thought I saw a thread about this before, but I can't find it or remember. Anyways, for the last week my computers are requesting and requesting CPU work units and only getting CUDA. The messasges on my Boinc say "Project has no jobs available"... Did they stop making the CPU work units, or is it just coinsidence that when I connect there are no work units? My computers are connecting about every 15 minutes. Also, I've double checked my settings, they seem to be correct for getting bot CPU and GPU work. It seems kind of a waste to now only be getting CUDA work units. My computers could still process a lot more if they were getting both. |

Okay, I thought I saw a thread about this before, but I can't find it or remember. This morning one of my systems ran out of CUDA's: could not get seti, seti beta or gpugrid, and my gtx had been dry for an hour before I noticed. I tried a bunch of stuff that didnt work including resetting all the cuda projects. Finally I suspended all tasks, set "no new work" for all tasks, then unsuspended GPUGRID and then selected "allow new work" and that did the trick. BM finally showed a request for "asking for work" or something like that. Somewhere in there I also rebooted but that may not be necessary. I had a huge amount of negative debt on all projects except gpugrid and supposidly that can screw things up (the negative debt, not gpugrid) OOPS sorry - i thought you were out of GPU. However, you might still try the same crap but select some CPU type project to un-suspend. Else just ignore my rant. |

Gary, if you are running stock you can't run regular MB and CUDA. You can run CUDA and AP but they are out of APs to send right now because they are coming out with a new version. If you want to run regular MB on your CPU and CUDA on you GPU you would have to run Raistmer's V8x Optimizing package. I don't have the link to the thread in Number Crunching Forum right now but will dig it out and edit it in here. no, you do not need rainmans. All you need to do is set some stuff in the cc_config.xml. I'm doing it on my core2 duo laptop with nvidia graphics. set the numcpus parameter to "3" |

Actually, my system has been running both CPU and GPU processes at the same time on 6.4.5 for week or so now.. But now, out of the blue, it gets no CPU tasks of any kind. I just get a message saying "Project Has No Available Jobs". Also, I'm still getting that, and I turned off using the GPU, and reset the project. So now, I am just running nothing because I did the reset and no CPU units are coming at all. |

I got it figured out.. I've decided to just stop running the CUDA units. Sure they finish faster, but they seriously affect the performance of my system in multiple ways. On my system with 256mb of video ram the CUDA runs pretty much fully on the CPU anyways. On my sytem with 500mb of video ram I noticed a significant decrease in video performance. Its just not worth it, maybe if I had extra computers to dedicate to SETI it would be different, but my computers are working computers, and need to still have their performance. For those that care, on my system with 500mb video ram, the problem is just really slow graphics. Slow enough that I notice it when I type. I typically touch type about 60wpm and when CUDA is running the system is always behind in typing, it looks like I'm typing like 30wpm and I have to stop typing to let the computer catch up. Moving windows is a slow process also, basically anything dealing with the display goes slower. Hard to do the description justice. |
