Man I miss the days of dual-channel DDR400 being set to 2-2-2-5 and 1:1 with the FSB. Those were the days. I still have two sets of Ballistix that will do those timings..which is what I bought them for..feeding the XP 3200+.

Indeed -- note, that for the DDR3 memory, very much like pushing DDR2 to 1066, to get lower CAS settings (say 7 instead of 9) along with the higher speed (say DDR1333 to DDR2000) the same push the chips approach by tossing above standard voltage applies -- instead of the DDR3 standard of 1.5V, the faster DDR3 memory needs anything from 1.65v to 1.9v. I bet you those memory chips run toasty.

Now's the time to pick up some bargains. While in London earlier today, I found the price of the 940 flucuating wildly but all around the £230 mark. Too rich for my blood but managed to get a 9600be & 9950be for not much more than one 940.

Higher in clock cyles, not time.

At double the clock speed of DDR2 the latency delay in actual time is still less. DDR 2 CAS5 = DDR 3 CAS10 timewise.

Just a comment on the i7, from personal experiences with HT enabled machines (I have 3 running at the moment including the i7 940) ...

If you run all one project you can indeed see slower than expected behavior. However, if you mix-n-match with multiple projects you can see as high as 1.8 of the measured performance of the single core in non-HT mode. In other words, you get 80% of a core for "free" ...

When running the GPU Grid application 6.21 which had a very high CPU consumption I saw a 22% load on the Q9300 which meant that I essentially lost an entire core to feed one GPU. On the i7 I was seeing a load of 7% per GPU core (a total of 21% for the three GPU cores I have in the system) which shows a substantial improvement over a "naked" core ...

Ah yes, between the premium for US electronics in the US and the reduced value of the Pound to the Dollar, you are getting hurt -- the US cost for a 940 right now is $229 and there are some combination prices at my favorite online store (NewEgg) which reduce the cost with a decent 790GX board to $325 or so.

I looked at your work units for the Phenom II. It looks like most of your results errored out. Your overclock is not stable. In the few results you did get credit the Phenom II took almost 3 times as long as my i7 (see for yourself...I have only 1 host.)

I'd reinstall BOINC and the optimised science app for AMD. Don't overclock until you are happy that your client is fast and stable for the new AMD platform. You also need to update your BIOS asap.

Been over at http://www.xtremesystems.org and 1.7b4 seems to have issues but 1.7b3 is ok or you can just wait for official release.

I had a look at kwalks computers and I think Phenom is listed as AMD Processor model unknown. Is that the way its supposed to be?

Backed the CPU down to the 3Ghz default. I don't know if and when MSI will get a BIOS update out for the K9A2. I have tried what feels like 100 combination's of voltages and ratios but I can't get the memory to run faster than 800Mhz. I was not paying much attention until tonight so I missed the erroneous results on the work units. So ends the grand experiment for now.

I picked myself up a Phenom II X4 920 - 2.8 GHz, got the puppy O/C to 8% without any troubles.. Running a 3.03 GHz. Heat, well, it's in my Nvidia Cooler Master case with 3 - 80 fans (pluse stock AMD CPU fan) running and the core temp never gets above 51C.

Unbelievable the speed of this CPU..

I just hope the boys get the kinks out of the servers so I always have SETI work. I've been d/l 1.5 days of work at a time, but it is never enough. Back for more and server errors (out of work or offline).

For to now my K9A2 Platinum is not running.. so I can't look into BIOS..

But to my knowledge this mobo support 1066 MHz DDR2 RAMs..

In the RAM-menu you must change the settings from AUTO to USER [or something similar]
And then change the settings that the RAM is @ 1066 MHz..

Only guessing for now.. ;-)


BTW.
For example my OCZ 1066 MHz 5-5-5-15 run @ 2.1 - 2.3 V [sticker on RAM]

Did you get some deep discount on the 920 -- from what I've seen there is only a $30 difference between it and the 940, and with a decent motherboard, with the unlocked multiplier on the 940, one ought to be able to bump it to about 3.4 or 3.5 compared to the 3.0 you are getting -- and without overclocking the buss to get there. I am hoping to be able to try one of the 940's out within a month.
