Hello. This is starting to annoying me a lot. Whenever I close Boinc (v.6.2.19) running SETI in the quick launch bar, at the right side in the bottom, I can see in the Task Manager, that SETI is being run by the User Boinc_Project. If I close that, it just starts again after a while (not sure how long time it take before it starts again. But I guess after a minute or two).
I did not have this problem with the last version of Boinc. But then again, I think Boinc had some similar problem some versions before + I have a newer computer with a different OS now.
I have Windows XP Home with SP3 version 2002, and a Dell Optiplex GX270 computer with Celeron 2,4 Ghz with 1 GB DDR ram. My configuration for Boinc (SETI), is "running all the time" with no specific time interval for crunching data. But anyhow, it should be possible for me, to close the application when I feel like it. Just as before, with the last version.
Any idea? If so, thanks in advance.

Hi it could be the way you're shutting down BOINC is causing the errors you're getting on your tasks. I believe in your version of BOINC if installed as a service there are several ways to stop BOINC 6.2.x:

1) BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Shut down connected client->OK->Cancel followed by BOINC Manager->File->Exit.

2) BOINC Manager->File->Exit followed by Windows Start button->Run, type net stop boinc, click OK.

3) BOINC Manager->File->Exit followed by Windows Start button->Run, type services.msc, click OK. Find BOINC in the Services applet. Right click on it, choose Stop from the drop-down menu.

To start BOINC and the service again, just go Start->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager link.

You can see on your Tasks for computer page that you are getting errors "Incorrect function. (0x1) - exit code 1 (0x1)
" as in this example of your results, which can be caused from improperly shutting down the client. There's also more info on this error here regarding other possible causes..

All good info from BSG. There is also the shortcut - copy the following 3 lines into a text file that you save on your desktop called Boinc Stop.bat (or anything else as long as it has a .bat extension):
@echo off
net stop boinc
pause 0

Then, after you have closed the Boinc Manager, just double-click on the .bat file on the desktop to stop Boinc.

Thanks for the quick answer/solution. It is just a bit shame, I have to do a bit more now. Because, it was possible for me to shutdown the older versions of Boinc down, just by doing the ol' quick/ugly right-button on the Boinc icon in quick launch bar. It's nice to be able to close the application fast down, because I do a little gaming sometimes. And Bioshock or Hitman -Contracts-, is not very happy about, SETI doing 100% of CPU usage ;-)
Anyway, it's not a big deal. Just something to get used to...you know, old habits and so on. Or I'll do the Fred W solution.
Thanks.

What happened is the default installation of 6.2.19 is as a service, that means that BOINC starts crunching even before you log in.

If you want the option to start and stop it yourself, you would need to reinstall and make sure that Protected Application mode is not selected.

If you just want to pause Seit from crunching while you're playing your game or similar type things for a while, just put it on snooze, or suspend the project till you're done. That's what I do sometimes when playing Half Life2, though when I just let Seti crunch when playing the game I don't notice a difference, the game runs just as smooth.
