Had a read around but couldn't find anything similar. I've noticed that my hard disk seems to be being written to/read from a lot when SETI is running. I know that the default preferences are set to data being written every 60 seconds (which is the setting I use), but there's hard disk activity every other second on this system. It's always been the case, but I've only thought to enquire about it now. As far as I know the disk isn't on its way out, as the seek noises stop when I stop SETI. As soon as I restart it the noises reappear. Don't get me wrong; it doesn't interfere with the syste'sm performance at all so it's not exactly a major issue. I'm just curious as to whether this is normal behaviour or if something's slightly amiss. It is rather annoying though, as apart from these random seek noises my PC is otherwise virtually silent, and hard disk noise really irritates me! EDIT: Hmm, seems I might have put this in the wrong forum... please move it if necessary! |

The "write to disk" option simply tells the science app when to write a checkpoint. BOINC and the science app constantly write information to result files and update all sorts of XML files in the BOINC directory. |

Ah, that's reassuring. Should've guessed it would be something simple. Thanks for the info! |
