Warming Threatens Cold-Blooded Creatures

Rising global temperatures are threatening the populations of lizard species all over the world. Lizards are cold-blooded creatures, meaning their internal body temperatures are regulated by the temperature of their environment. Because temperatures today are so high, lizards are increasingly retreating to the shade when they would normally be basking or hunting for food. As a result, they do not have the energy necessary to support a clutch of eggs or embryos and are not reproducing as they once did. Massive extinctions are now being seen in many areas of the world, including Mexico, the Amazon Basin, and equatorial Africa.
