Message 805137 - Posted: 5 Sep 2008, 2:53:14 UTC - in response to Message 805001.

To pay for computers, computer parts, electricity, maintenance and all the rest that goes along with crunching for Seti is a given fact. We all do these things.

To then NOT financially donate to the project side is not logical.

OMG...is that a double negative?

I do not think it was logical for Seti to start another project when the servers were already full up with Seti. It just seems to me the current Seti project is poorly run, maybe if it failed someone else might start a better managed project doing the same thing Seti tries to do.

poorly run? I can't believe you just said that. What's the matter with you?

Friends--let's focus on ways to help the project--not demean the staff or other's attempts to do good work for the project.

EVERYONE'S ideas are valid here--whether they've donated or not--the posting of constructive ideas is fully encouraged.

making it mandatory would be illegal, as seti@home is a not profit organization, they can beg people to give them money but can not refuse to let us play if we dont donate. if they did it would have to change over to a for profit company, and most likely berkley would not let that happen.

Actually, "not-for-profit" means a whole lot less than you think it does.

There are "not-for-profit" organizations that charge a lot for membership.

The governing rules here are set by the Regents of the University of California, since SETI@Home doesn't exist separately.

... and even then, I suspect that they could charge for membership.

But that is kind-of off-topic. The idea here is that SETI needs to find more money. If they don't, the Regents won't bail them out.

So, we need to figure out ways to find that money if we want SETI to continue.

The best answer to immediate fund raising with little effort, EBay. Get the staff to start signing items and selling them away. Sell hard drives filled with space chatter. Sell a date with a staff member. Whatever needs to be done :)

John Macleod VII's idea of a raffle further clarified................

An International raffle twice a year with tickets costing $10.

Winner get's a day with the Project staff @ Seti with Lunch paid for & presented with unique project gifts. Provisio in raffle stating that minimum funds required.

I'm pretty sure that if this was started & successful, the project staff would not object to 2 days a year out of their busy schedule if funds gained were sufficient enough to enable an extra pair of hands to aid the project. Any spare could go towards more hardware or vice versa.

I, for one, would not object to providing another $20 for said raffle. For those winners who can not attend, notify the project & the next in line wins.

I'm pretty sure that UCB would help on this as they would get their administrative cut from the total received.

Saturn 1B I've heard of and of the mighty Saturn V rocket, But VB? It was never built. 6,000,000 of pure thrust and throw weight, Want to get to Pluto fast, You need a Saturn V, Sad to say We would have to reverse engineer any new ones from the sole existing example that is left in Florida, Which had been scheduled for Apollo 18's liftoff for the moon(363-foot tall/long launch vehicle).
SNIP
Ok back to topic, Wasn't Astropulse meant to help Seti in some form?

Thanks Joker, I stand corrected. Must be my memory, it was 39 years ago. I've always thought that the Sat V was the early Apollo's but for the moon landings, I thought they were Sat VB (Built the Airfix model on 1st release all those years ago, & again, sure it was Sat VB).

Now you know my secret - Got "farm" to not only crunch but to replace failing brain cells ;)

We have to be careful that whatever is sold would not be "University Property" since most of the active servers in fact belong to them.

So it becomes a question of how to "manufacture" artifacts that are still cool, yet represent the work being done.

Now a raffle's a good idea, Question is then what to raffle? Moon rock? Nah, NASA property, But a good idea none the less.

Pretty certain that if done right, S@H could hit $100k or more with raffles & auctions, & add in the regular donations, they would be a lot better off than they are currently.

With all the diverse trades of crunchers, there must be somebody out there who can come up with some more viable options?

To answer a question posted earlier. Astropulse is a funded project.

Huh? Astropulse is funded, Seti@home is not? How can Astropulse ride piggyback on unfunded servers & resources ? Seems backwards to me.

I smell rotten fish...

Afterthought: Let's get some cash from Astropulse...

That is what Eric told me yesterday. It does make sense, since it takes a more detailed look at the data.

Off topic. I went to Berkeley yesterday and got a little tour. On topic.

That is when Eric mentioned the funding.

$10 a ticket is really high if you expect to sell to the general public. I mean people in the know would do that much, but the less you know about what is done the less you want to give. Most raffles go with something like $1 a ticket, $5 gets you 6 tickets. You might be able to push it to like $2 or $2.50 maybe.

Brian......

I will try to be gentle but firm.

The question of green stars is of no consequence here. We have postings by members both with and without. I have asked to keep this thread on topic and now I am asking you directly to keep it on topic. I am only interested in raising funds for Seti and ideas to do so in this thread.

AP does the same thing as MB but looks in different ways. This is from the about Astropulse information page: 'Astropulse is a new type of SETI. It expands on the original SETI@home, but does not replace it. The original SETI@home searches for narrowband signals, as does a conventional AM or FM radio. Astropulse, on the other hand, listens for broader-band, short-time pulses.'
That is one of the reasons that it takes longer to crunch a WU.

As for donating to the project, I have no extra funds at all. I am on a very limited budget. I am trying to pay off bills that have accrued over the past 2 years. when I get them paid off then I can think about donating, but not until then. I have one rig with 2 OSes on it so it shows 2 rigs. and if you look at my rig's specs it is nowhere near what some of the others have. But I do what I can.

It was just an example. This is an ideas thread. The good ones can get polished by the project staff. Most good raffles over here go for £1 ($2) a ticket. & I've even participated in excellent raffles at £5 ($10) per ticket.
