The variability of solar (or wind) energy has never really been a problem. It's been presented as such often enough, though I'm not really sure why, because the "solution" is so blindingly obvious that I'm not sure that it reasonably can be called a "solution". Solar variability only presents any problem at all if solar is the *only* form of energy available.

The simple solution is to maintain a backup power station. We already have plenty of them. They are called "our existing conventional electric plants". The only sane way to introduce solar and wind power is to have them supplement existing plants. Ideally, the solar generator (or wind farm) would have enough capacity to carry the grid a good portion of the time, minimally supplemented by the conventional plant. But on cloudy days the conventional plant simply has to carry most of the load. You're still using a fraction of the fossil fuels you would use otherwise. QED

The real story here (If there is one. The link is sketchy on details) is that solar energy can be made transportable. Generate the hydrogen (efficiently, he says) and transport it to hydrogen fuel stations for use by hydrogen powered vehicles. It sounds like it is not really solar specific; any electric source would do.
