Would it be possible to allow you to set different sized caches for each project in preferences in a later released version of BOINC?

It is possible in the current version, using resource share. The default share for each project is 100 when you first attach. You can make this number larger or smaller as required.

e.g. I currently have resource shares as follows.

SETI Beta 100
SETI 50
lhcathome 33
rosetta@home 50
ralph@home 100
Leiden 20
Einstein 25
boincsimap 10
malariacontrol 50
orbit@home 100
Milkyway 50

You can also set projects to [No New Tasks] as required.

I don't think it's really necessary.

Cache size is about not running out of work. As long as one of your projects is up, you will not run out of work, even if your cache is tiny.

If you have a short cache, and a project is down, BOINC will simply run other projects, and the project that is down will accrue debt.

When it is back, debt will be used to bring everything back to your resource share.

So, one project: cache at 5 days or so. Two projects, two day cache. More than two projects, you can set it short -- less than a day.

Of course, if you crunch two projects that live on the same servers and could be subject to the same outages (SETI and SETI Beta), count those as one.
