Message 788317 - Posted: 27 Jul 2008, 21:16:24 UTC - in response to Message 788165.

Uhh.. big news..!! :-)

How it will be?

I crunch 100 % SETI@home..
When and where I can get the new app_info.xml ?(I'm an opt. app user :-)
So how much % SETI@home Enhanced and how much % Astropulse WUs I will get?
How are the credits? It's the same like with SETI@home Enhanced?
When we will see opt. Astropulse apps?

Which kind of WUs are Astropulse WUs? What will be crunched there?

Questions and questions.. ;-D

A few partial answers:

A. In the SETI Beta "AstroPulse release soon" thread, this post by Richard Haselgrove includes both the URLs for downloading the AstroPulse files and the additions which need to be made to app_info.xml for Windows. Read a little further in the thread to see that it would be best to also remove the spaces in:

<executable />

<main_program />

Nearby posts in the same thread by Urs Echternacht give the patterns for Linux.

B. If the same data is split with an mb_splitter and an ap_splitter, there will be 40.4 times as many MB workunits as AP workunits. I'd expect that to be the eventual normal mode, though for now they're limiting AP work. However, the splitters work at different rates and MB splitting is inherently bursty while AP isn't. That means the work is not going to be evenly distributed in the project "Ready to send" pool and even the fastest hosts are likely to have periods when the host queue doesn't have a mix.

C. They've made an attempt to make the credits more or less match the stock setiathome_enhanced, and the new server-side adapting multiplier will take care of equalizing the remaining difference. Once everything settles out, AP work will give a very constant credit since every WU gets the same processing.

D. The AstroPulse FAQ and the science details to which it links describe the application and what it's looking for quite well. Each WU contains 13.4217728 seconds of the full 2.5 MHz bandwidth data captured by the recorder.
                                                              Joe

Ok, I am using 64-bit Windows Vista Ultimate SP1, 64-bit BOINC 6.2.14 and Alex Kan's optimized SETI@home application Windows 64 bit AK v8.0 SSE3 (AMD/INTEL). My C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu folder's app_info.xml looks like this:

I also downloaded these files manually:

I put those files into the C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu folder.

Big question for all of us here.. ;-D ..it will come opt. Astropulse apps?
Or is the calculation of the AP WUs different and the MMX - (S)SSEx will not used?

Have you downloaded the other files? (the files necessary to process the AP WU's).

OK. I've tweaked the app_info.xml to add the AstroPulse stanzas. I've manually downloaded the files. I've restarted BOINC, and after two days of waiting, I haven't noticed a single ap_* WU downloaded. I wish I could tell if it was because there have been none available to grab. Right now, I'm thinking my host isn't getting any because I may have fu'bed the app_info.xml or something.

How could I prove the cause of this? Should something show up in the logs when I restarted BOINC to confirm this "new app" was found in the app_info.xml? I'm still happily downloading and crunching MB WU's, so at least I didn't totally bork it up. :-)

Thanks.

I have both my Mac and PC hopefully set to run Astropulse with changes in the app_info.xml file, but I also hope I have them set correctly as well.

Actually, another thought. Does this require a newer version of BOINC? 5.10.45 is what I have installed, maybe 6.10+ would be required? I'm not expecting so, if current crunchers running the stock app are getting AP automatically, but just pondering...

Since 5.10.45 is the latest released version, I believe that it should be sufficient.

There should be no concern about BOINC version, the anonymous platform mechanism has been there for a long time.

After a work request, you could look at the sched_request_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml file. It should contain an <app_versions> section listing both the setiathome_enhanced and astropulse apps as taken from the app_info.xml.

My guess is that with only one ap_splitter running, AP WUs are simply a very small proprtion of what's available.

Hi, folks.

Has anyone posted copies of the app_info.xml files for Alex's optimized applications with the Astropulse application added? I tried updating my SSSE3 Win32 app_info.xml file and must have missed something. Damn thing zapped all of my pending S@H workunits (sorry, wingmen!).

Thanks in advance!

Try looking earlier in this very thread at what Henri posted. Looks like a reasonable template.

I am working on one for my system which is a 32-bit version and using SSSE3.

I am also installing 6.2.14 on it and will be back with observations here in a bit.
