A new proposed law in Chicago:
ban on texting while driving

A City Council committee today unanimously passed a proposed ban on sending text messages while driving in Chicago.

The measure is likely to come up for a final vote at the Oct. 8 council meeting.

The new restriction, which also would cover using wireless devices to browse the Internet, builds on the 2005 rule against talking on hand-held cell phones while driving. Violators could face a $75 fine, with the penalty rising to as much as $200 if the violations "occurs at the time of a traffic accident."

Ummmmmmmm....I do not consider that a 'dumb law'.......
Many's the time I have been almost crashed by a stupid driving action.......
And the number of times that I have witnessed the perp of those actions having a cell phone glued to their ear...........many....if fact, most.

Imagine trying to text whilst driving, instead of just yakking on the cell......
I hope it passes.

Can't imagine why this would need to be a law. More like common sense.

I noticed when looking up these dumb laws it does not indicate the date law(s) were inacted.

Some of them actually made sense when enacted, but fail in the modern world.

Like the Georgia law (repealed, I believe) that stated that anyone driving an automobile through a town had to have a person walking in front of the car waving a lantern and yelling (I don't remember exactly what but it was a fixed phrase). It made absoloutely no sense at all by the time it was repealed in the 1980's.

Semi-stupid law:

In California, trucks have a 55 MPH speed limit: cars have a 70 (or 65, varies by location...) MPH speed limit. Thus, if both are observing (and at) the speed limit, (and that's very seldom, in my experience!) a car can pass a truck at up to 15 MPH speed difference. (Generally known as "blowing the doors off"!)

This truck speed limit has been in place since long before the nation-wide 55 mph law; when that law expired, California reverted to the "cars 65, (or 70) trucks 55 MPH"

Vehicles towing any form of trailer are also limited to 55, BTW. (It seems [at times] that no one in CA follows this one...)

Not in a household with kids. In no time flat, I would have a housefull of candy lovers. But then again, I have no husband at this time :)

Dunno about this law....but I can tell you this......
Many years ago, I flew to Atlanta, Georgia to pick up my '85 RX7....driving back out of Georgia on the interstate, the truckers were fearless......
We were doing 75-80mph in the RX7...didn't really wanna push it much further than that in an unfamiliar car.....and the truckers were blowing OUR doors off..........

Please note that in CA, "trucks" are defined (for speed limit purposes) as any vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of more than 26,000 lbs. Take a look at the truck door or that immediate vicinity - CA registered trucks will have a weight sticker with the GVW rounded up to the nearest 5,000 lbs. The exception to the rounding is "26": trucks with this or less are NOT subject to the 55 mph limit. (BTW anything over 26,000, and you are required to have a Commercial Driver's License. [CDL] )

The last time I was in GA (late 2006), trucks (any weight) had the same speed limit that the cars did - as in 27 of the 28 states I drove through - only CA has this difference, TMK!
