Battle of Gettysburg Begins(1863) The Battle of Gettysburg was the largest and bloodiest battle fought during the American Civil War, resulting in some 50,000 casualties in 3 days. It took place in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and signaled a turning of the tide in favor of the Union. The site is now a national cemetery, at whose dedication on November 19, 1863, President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. Seamstress Ginnie Wade was the only documented civilian casualty of the battle ![]() ![]() LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |

I believe that on July 1, 1957, the International Geophysical Year (IGY) began. Oddly enough it continued for 18 months, not just a year. |

Revolt Aboard the Amistad (1839) In 1839, 53 African slaves being transported on the Spanish merchant ship La Amistad revolted against their captors. Though their transport to the US was illegal, when they arrived in New York they were declared salvage by the US Navy and were taken to be sold as slaves. The widely publicized court cases that ensued helped propel the abolitionist movement. In 1842, the Africans finally returned home after the Supreme Court ruled they were not legally slaves Amistad (1839) ![]() ![]() LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |

Disneyland Opens in Anaheim, California July 17(1955) Having welcomed more than 515 million visitors since its opening, Disneyland is perhaps the world's most famous themed amusement park. Walt Disney's original plans called for a modest park to be built on eight acres next to the Disney Studios. A much more ambitious Disneyland opened to invited guests and the media on July 17, 1955, a year after construction had begun My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions. ![]() |

he German Assembly Adopts the Weimar Constitution (1919) Written immediately after WWI, the Weimar constitution was the document that governed the short-lived Weimar Republic of Germany. According to the document, the nation was to be a federal republic, governed by a president and parliament. This was a strong attempt to establish a liberal democracy in Germany, but it occurred during a time of civil conflict and failed with the ascent of the Nazi Party in 1933. ![]() ![]() LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |

New London Bridge Opens (1831) In 1831, the more than 600-year-old fire-damaged London Bridge was replaced with a new, five-arched, granite bridge. Designed by John Rennie, the New London Bridge spanned the city's River Thames for over a century. In 1968, it was purchased by American entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where it has since become Arizona's second biggest tourist attraction after the Grand Canyon. ![]() ![]() LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |

Warsaw Uprising begins It was intended to last for two days but continued for two months. 138,000 - 218,000 people died during the events. Uprisers were trying to unleash Warsaw from the Nazis but they failed. The Red Army was supposed to help Polish soldiers but they were just standing few kilometers from the city doing nothing. One day like today in 1492, Christoph Columbus (ES= Cristobal Colón) departed the small village of Palos, today´s province of Huelva, Atlantic Ocean coast in southern mainland of Spain, with three vessels: "Pinta", "Niña" and "Santa MarÃÂa", looking for a west route to India and China. Until his death he was convinced of having discovered the shortest way to the "Western Indias". This had the following result, among others:Tratado de Tordesillas...but this is another story [and out of topic] Cheers! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Niger Gains Independence from France (1960) In 1884-85, the Conference of Berlin placed the territory of Niger within the French sphere of influence. In 1900, Niger was made a military territory within Upper Senegal–Niger, and in 1922 it was constituted a separate colony within French West Africa. National political activity began when Niger received its own assembly under the French constitution of 1946, which established the French Union. Niger achieved full independence on August 3, 1960 ![]() ![]() LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |

Feudalism Abolished in France (1789) Less than a month after the storming of the Bastille, the National Assembly held a meeting in which the nobles and clergy, driven partly by fear and partly by an outburst of idealism, relinquished their manorial rights. In the course of a few hours, nobles, clergy, towns, provinces, companies, and cities lost their special privileges. Shortly afterward, the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen ![]() ![]() LETS BEGIN IN 2010 |
