Message 767965 - Posted: 14 Jun 2008, 11:38:08 UTC - in response to Message 767875.

I'm not quite clear on WU uploads & downloads, but a website can have more than one registered URL that points to that IP address.
And from what I vaguely remember from something that happened months ago, the "primary" project address was http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/, but the [re]Captcha license (used in updating the profiles) was registered to http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/beta/.

Understood. Both of these URLs seem to point to the exact same webpage. If one is "correct" for the project and the other is "wrong"... then the wrong one should point to and load the correct one to avoid confusion, IMO. But then I am only a programmer and am ignorant to details of webpage management... Maybe what I suggest makes no sense to project webmasters.

When I went to attach to "SETI Beta" via BOINC Manager, I didn't see the project listed on on the popup selection list. So I performed a google search on seti+astropulse. The first returned result seemed the only reasonable result on the first page and after viewing, seemed especially reasonable. Only after attaching to it and DL ~150 hours of AP 4.33 work I view my "messages" where I was informed that I attached to the "wrong" URL and provided with the "correct" project URL.

It's no problem... I'm just making comments about my "attaching to SETI Beta experience"... I'll detatch then reattach to the "correct" URL after my AP queue is empty.

Let's be honest the Beta experience is crap.
You crunch for 150 hr and the WU errors out and sometimes your system crashes.
You crunch for 100 hr and the Dev requests that you abort all your WUs so you can immediately start testing a newer version of the application.
Such is the life of a Beta tester. But, if someone doesn't do it, Seti main would be a disaster for months when a new software was released.
The only consolation comes from knowing that the trials at Beta usually produces a relatively painless experience for the mainstream Seti users.

1st wu estimated at 154hrs. Now crunched 68 with 33 to go (on a 9500 Phenom - 1 core only). Should be completed some time tomorrow.

Well completed my first unit it took 155.25 hours. The next unit is ticking away slowly. I claimed 1334.05 but received 1261.42 Oh well see what the next one will do.

Ouch................so I suppose the 20 hour range is not too bad?

You think that is bad. I got 2 wu from Orbit this morning and after chewing on one of them for the last 11 hours BOINC thinks they have another 22 hours to go. I estimate they will take around 45 hours. Machine is a P4 @ 3Ghz.

These numbers are just peanuts for anyone that runs CPDN. My quaddie has one model that is at just over 50% after 859 hours and another that had a hiccup after 900 hours so is estimating 2159 hours to completion (i.e it has got to crunch through the 900 hours again without registering any credits before any more claims are credited).

My one consolation on this is that if my rig wasn't doing them then the science would take much longer to get done.

I've had 3 different computers attached to CPDN over the last 4 years. Only my C2D has ever managed to complete a couple of models without erroring out half way though.
I've lost WUs due to 'normal' system crashes (Win 98) and the death of 2 computers. Even my C2D lost work when my MOBO burn out and again when the OS got corrupted and I had to wipe the drive. I don't know how the average user can ever get through one of those WU, since most don't crunch 24/7.

Criminy....if the Frozen Penny takes this long to crunch 'em, I could just guess what the average cpu would do......not pretty.

There's 32 times as much data in an AstroPulse WU compared to a sah_enhanced WU. Crunching uses different but similar analysis, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that AP work takes considerably longer.

We probably will lose some participants who need instant gratification, but the users with average CPUs are probably not in that group.

LOL.....
We are all a minor event in the calendar or time.............
The fact that we even joust at the stars could be laughed at by many...........
But joust we must, lest our existence be a total joke.

There have been many things in our lifetime (so short) that could be washed away as trivial.............but what would we have left then?

In conversation with Eric, AP 4.33 is really not ready for the Optimizers. Joe will probably know before I do that a version to be checked is ready.

With Enhanced MultiBeam a Version different than was in Seti Beta made it to Seti Main. It was optimized with the compiler that is used for "ALL Machines."

So at a point in time the working Beta Testers may very well be asked to test various optimized versions. In some of those cases it may be running the Standalone Testing... The people that do that are not fighting to get every ounce of credit from all their rigs... They are there to Help Make the Next Version "Better!"

That said, "we" all have to wait...

Regards

Al

Just finished 1st wu. 95:29:02 for 1,522.36 credit. Nice. However, won't be able to run 4 of these on quad in hot weather, they're as bad as QMC (heat wise). Come cooler weather, will run these.
