I just got a new PC and I'm sending my old PC to a friend. It still has BOINC tasks in it, and I was wondering, could I transfer those unfinished tasks to my new computer so it can resume the computation? Any ideas on how to make this? Thanks! |

I just got a new PC and I'm sending my old PC to a friend. It still has BOINC tasks in it, and I was wondering, could I transfer those unfinished tasks to my new computer so it can resume the computation? As long as you have not yet installed BOINC on the new machine, it is fairly easy. 1) Uninstall BOINC from the old machine. 2) Copy the entire BOINC directory structure to the new machine (NOTE: 5.x and Vista needs special instructions to install correctly. If installing 5.x on Vista, install in c:\\BOINC and install as a Service). 3) Install BOINC on the new machine. 4) Run the benchmarks. If you have already installed BOINC on the new machine, but have not downloaded any work, uninstall BOINC from the new machine, then follow the instructions above. Otherwise, you are out of luck. It is possible, but is dramatically harder, and not many people have successfully done it. ![]() ![]() BOINC WIKI |

Oh, okay. Thanks. But I eventually cancelled the old tasks and reinstalled BOINC on the new PC. I really appreaciate your reply! I just got a new PC and I'm sending my old PC to a friend. Quite a few CPDN members need to transfer their BOINC folder contents from one computer to another because the climate models are so long that they sometimes last longer than the machine they're on. So the CPDN README posts are very useful on the topic of how to back up & restore the contents of the BOINC folder and how to move them. Here are the READMEs, 3rd section down. In the collection called Running the model there's a section about moving the BOINC folder. Whether you have a climate model or tasks from other projects makes no difference to the method. CPDN READMEs Basically you just exit fully from BOINC, back up the contents of the BOINC folder onto something that the new computer can 'see', then restore the backup to the new computer. If the new computer already had BOINC running on it you have to delete its folder contents first to restore the backup to an empty folder. You don't have to zip up the folder contents to move them. The two computers can have different versions of BOINC 5 - that's not a problem. If the new computer hasn't had BOINC previously, after the restore you download BOINC to the same location you've restored the backup to. Ie download BOINC onto the restored backup. If you need an easy and fail-safe backup/restore method, in the README about backups the first method by Les Bayliss explained click-by-click is excellent. |
