Ya Know.... I'll bet that one of these new game computers has more horsepower. There is a project to run SETI on one of them.. There is a distributed computing effort as well using one of these platforms. I remember seeing a big CRAY at RTP in North Carolina--By that time the desktop was almost as fast. The Illiac 4 took up a whole computer room and had 64 processors each doing 1 million instructions per second. It was banned from the University of Illinois campus for PC reasons wound up at NASA Ames. My MAC can probably do 30 times more crunching right now for $1000 in Capital cost. DADDIO |
