Anytime anyone in the US wins a prize, he/she has to pay federal, usually state and possibly local income taxes on it. I steer away from lotteries, gambling, raffles etc, especially if the prize is something I don't really want. For example in October 1988 I went (with my late ladyfriend) to an anniversary celebration of a local airport. When I paid admission I was given a ticket which won $120 worth of dancing lessons. I didn't think I'd ever use that but, like an idiot, accepted the prize. The certificate lay on my dresser a year or two, then I threw it away. In the meantime I had to pay about $50 worth of income taxes on something I never used. A prize for a negative fifty dollars! Casinos in Nevada only get tax info if the winnings are over $1000. ![]() |

http://www.hothardware.com/News/Win_the_BEAST_HotHardwares_Skulltrail_Give_Awa/ It's nice to run your own mail server -- if you want to enter a sweepstakes or something, you can always have a new E-Mail address, even if only for a few weeks. You can even set up addresses like ned@no-spam.whatever and get rid of them later. |
