Message 690489 - Posted: 11 Dec 2007, 0:31:36 UTC

One of my 3 PCs has just started suspending computation after running for 3 or 4 minutes, and then resumes on any input (keyboard, mouse movement, etc.). It doesn't appear to be running hot, and the other 2 machines are working as normal. Typical messages below. Any suggestions?

Is this a laptop machine? What version of BOINC is running on this machine?

It is a very old desktop, running a 902 mHz Celeron single processor, and BOINC Manager 5.10.28.

I would check the preferences. New host venue possibly? Local preferences?

I reset to network preferences, no differences. Tried running just SETI, then just Rosetta, no differences. The other other 2 PCs running the same network preferences are behaving as per normal.

Possibly it would help to compare client_state.xml files between the one with weird behavior and one which is working as expected, probably only the host_info section.

I get the feeling it may have something to do with the preference to only crunch when the user is inactive, but the core client is toggling the activity the wrong way. You might want to change the state and duration of that setting to see if it modifies behavior.

If you haven't tried a reinstall, there's always a possibility that boinc.exe or one of the DLLs it uses has been corrupted. I'd just copy known good files from one of the hosts which is working correctly, but doing a repair from the installer is the official approach.

I compared the .xml files, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. The differences seem to be related to the different processors in the different boxes.

I tried a re-install of BONIC Manager, no difference. Tried changing various things in local and global preferences, still no differences. The misbehaving box has been shut down for now, it may just be too old.

Message 691390 - Posted: 14 Dec 2007, 14:41:49 UTC - in response to Message 690917.

I think I've solved this. It appears to be an issue with BOINC Manager 5.10.28. After scrolling through all the .xml files on my 3 boxes, I found this in global_prefs.xml on all 3 boxes:

<suspend_if_no_recent_input>3</suspend_if_no_recent_input>

It appears that the earlier versions of BOINC Manager ignore this or override it somehow. I edited the .xml file to change the value to 15, and the machine started suspending every 15 minutes. It is now set to 9999, and has been running for about 30 minutes without problem. Stay tuned for further developments.

Some questions remain, however. Why is only 5.10.28 using this value? Why can't I find it or change it on any of the pull down menus in BOINC Manager? Having to edit the .xml file doesn't seem to be very user friendly.

Have you tried setting it to "0". It would expect that to disable it entirely.

F.

[Edit]I'm also running 5.10.28 and haven't got this tag in my global_prefs.xml at all.[/Edit]

I would guess that

suspend_if_no_recent_input in .xml file

<=>

Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last x minutes
(Needed to enter low-power mode on some computers)
Enforced by version 5.10.14+
in Computing preferences on website.

That option is under advanced menu - Preferences.

I do believe that you have the do work while computer is in use option unchecked.

On my machines this choice doesn't show up under advanced menu - preferences. Also, I did have the "do work while computor is in use" option checked.

I did find it on the "computing preferences" web pages for SETI, Rosette and Einstein, but not for CPDN or WCG. All have been set to zero, all 3 boxes rebooted, and everything seems fine for now.
