Except that that isn't what happens.

The total tax burden drives the cost of living up, because all taxes are passed directly onto, and are therefore paid by, the consumer.

As that cost of living rises, those that can afford it the least, get screwed the most.

For example, pretty much everything here in the U.K. starts off at DOUBLE the price in the U.S., and goes up from there. That isn't robbing the rich Thorin, it's punishing those who can't afford it.

There is talk of "taxing the profits" of the large oil corporations here in the US, just like any business they will simply pass the cost on to the customer - there is no way to tax the profits. Gas will go up whatever amount it takes to cover the tax. The person living with the smallest income will be forced to pay an inordinate percentage of the "tax on the rich" as he/she has less to work with. The folks over in Europe are extremely aware of this as they have several dollars worth of tax on their gasoline. Thats why there are so many mopeds, etc. and so few cars compared to the US.
