I'm guessing that throughout the entire ride they kept promising you the world, eh? ;)

Working class, in my opinion, is a relatively new term to describe those of us who actually work for a living, but aren't really that much better off than those living off the government (a very recently born phenomenon as well).

For instance:

I "own" my own home, but it's a wood frame house off the ground while 6 of the 7 projects maintained by HUD in my area consist of brick homes on a slab. I have assets, they have "better" living conditions, in newer buildings, with no maintenance expenses. I live on a budget to make ends meet and save for my future, they don't have a mortgage and get free food. I pay taxes, they get "earned" income credit. I continue to pay for student loans, the "poor" qualify for government grants, etc. etc. etc...

Now Hitlery thinks I should pay for free health care too!!

Why do I try? Because I'm a REAL American!!!

Hm, I guess my family has some skill in screwing things up and I have inherited it.

Grand Grand father inherited two small businesses and several houses and land which would nowadays have value of several millions and managed to loose it all in inflation. Selling real estates in times of inflation - great idea :p

Grandpa was building motors for planes, had a good job and did not care much for building up an own business. We were discussing politics and stuff when I was a kid and I really miss him.

Dad and I screwed up our unique chances to make a fortune after the end of the communist regime in the Czech Republic. My dad is a workhorse and I really admire him for that, but could have invested far more effective then he did (he chose to reconstruct houses on his own instead of letting others work and instead of just buying, reconstructing and selling - that's how others, without the experience and seed money my dad had made their fortune).

I continue in that family tradition. My cousins started to trade with cars - without money, foreign language and business knowledge. Dumb me stayed as an employee in Germany instead of adding seed money, foreign language skills and a bit marketing and business knowledge. They have now about 30 employees and my cousin just said that it's so sad we did not start that business together, could be quite a international company now instead of a regional company.

Moved to the Czech Republic like 10 years too late and it's not as easy as it was before. Brother in law wants to open a restaurant and needs some help. Helping to build it up and right when it starts to make money after two years of hard work my brother in law wants it all for himself and I find out that I screwed up the memorandum of association, being too trustworthy and enthusiastic. Well, long story short I have another business now, new business partners and eight employees. I am also back to lots of work and risk for little money (which hopefully will change next year). Still lovin' it somehow - being an employee is not for me. Anyways life's fun and I love my 10 month old son - time for another child :)

Just telling all the stuff to show that life goes on. Crazy things happen in life, but you also need to take your chances. Plus - out of something bad something good can arise. You never know what surprise the life has for you, enjoy it as long as you can. And even if it's tough sometimes always remember that the most important thing in life is to be satisfied and not money. Envy just makes you dissatisfied - and look how many people of who you'd guess they have everything are dissatisfied because there is always someone who is richer, more powerful, better looking or whatever.

If it were that simple, I'd buy your ticket...

but you're to lazy to work and contribute to society, much less stop taking advantage of it, and run away.

Heh, Jeffrey what are you doing for a living?

Anyways, BrainSmashR I guess you should rethink your position.
I am all for real work paying out, people should be able to afford a house, car, wife@home, children and holidays - like it was in Germany in the 80's. Should help even economically if all have money to buy and not just a few, but globalization and rationalisation are constantly devaluing real work. I have somewhat the feeling that Bush = for the rich and screw the poor while Hilary = for the rich and feed the poor. In the end both does not help your own situation and you might find out that the Rep's sold out your country. But you still support them - really strange.

A guy like Jeffrey as president would at least care for your situation.

Again, as an outsider looking in, you don't have a clue other than what the slanted websites you visit want you to think....and that's ok, you don't have a vote anyway. Republicans are for the working man, regardless of his/her financial situation whereas the Dems are for the poor and minorities. Notice Bush isn't trying to push "free" health care at the expense of the working man, while Hitlery doesn't care about those of us working to make ends meet, she wants her voter base to be even more government dependent at the expense of those who DO work for a living.

OK. I'm back again :o)

When I started this thread I was quite interested in the social make up of people who crunch for SETI.

I used the word 'class' because it means something to me both sociologically and because it is part of my heritage. (UK.)

Maybe if I had of asked what 'educational background' or 'income level' people came from people would have given simpler answers but I think asking what 'class' has given more interesting responses.

From what I have seen most people in Europe generally understand the concept of 'class' and many in America don't quite accept it as a way of describing themselves.

If I could change the direction of this thread then I would ask where you would place the 'average' (not yourself) SETI cruncher in terms of class, education, income, background, philosophy, belief... whatever... etc??

Duh! Sounds like you're parroting what I told you from DAY ONE

People in America aren't as bigoted as you. Figure it out. .....Catch a clue. Get the wax out of your ears.

Brits are much more bigoted and the rest of the Euro weenies are even worse. I have doubts about your ability to reason morally. Have you thought even 5 minutes about how hateful and bigotted this thread is?

Next time make a thread about 'How inferior are blacks to white folks'...and be done with it.

Wow.

Sounds like you are telling me off.

The word 'class' simply relates to 'classifications'...

I would love to visit America as I think it is a wonderful culture.

I'm not sure where you got your view of the UK from.

You are always welcome to come visit us.

I love my country but I don't think it is the best country in the world.

We have a lot to change.

I just like my community. I hope I did not promote the worst of us!

If you want to accuse us of racism you need to checkout the statistics and our history.

We allow far more people percentage wise from non-white (or 'other') nations than most other societies around the world.

Our history means we have a genetic heritage stretching across most of Europe and into Africa and Asia.

If you think I am bigoted just come and spend a week here.

It's not expensive to get a flight to the UK.

We'll find you somewhere to stay.

Just don't be agressive with me R/B.

I just think to understand others you need to know something about yourself first.

(PS: R/B - This thread had nothing to do with Black / White issues. Why are you obsessed with that issue??)

You did suggest I should talk about Black / White and that we in the UK were bigots.

That equates to calling us/me racist.

It's Ok R/B though.

I just don't understand your aggression.

Maybe you just don't like me.

There are another 60 million people in the UK so I am fairly sure if you want to come and see for yourself you'll never have to meet me.

I never thought I was bigoted but I am quite ashamed of myself that you would think so :o(

(Do you really want to continue this sad conversation or can we just get back to the thread? You can always PM me your angst if you like!)

Funny, for an Englishman you don't seem to have a command of the language. Bigot doesn't equal racist.

I'm not in the business of running a 2nd grade classroom for people like you.

Don't tell me what I need to know about England and the UK. I've spend many months...many...in company with your kinsmen/women. I've lived with them. I know all I need to know.

I wish you'd close this thread. I was the first to post in it and warned you that it was a bad idea to impose this sort of 'classifications' on people as you put it.

You're serving no purposes other than to set people against eachother.

Close the thread! Why do you think so few of the usual posters have stooped so low as to even post in here? Go argue and pick a fight in a useful thread about something else than your genetic class oriented gibberish. Argue ideas and not heritage and hate.

I won't close the thread R/B.

If you want your posts deleted just ask the mods. Then I'll ask them to delete all my direct responses to you.

Otherwise your points of view are as valid as anyone elses as long as they are on topic.

I never 'imposed' anything. I just used the term 'class' and gave a rather broad description.

I was just interested in how people see themselves. I am sure people here are well capable of describing themselves regardless of my initial post.

You can be as angry with me as you like. Tomorrow you won't be.

As I said you are welcome to visit the UK.

The flight is not expensive and we will find some where for you to stay.

Come judge us first hand.
