Is there a "Minimum Recommended Donation" per registered user and/or active user?

There is no 'Minimum Recommended Donation' per registered/active user.

Like any charitable or voluntary work, you give what you want to / if you want to.

Though I'm certain that SETI@home would certainly appreciate it if more users did...

FWIW, when I made my donation (only a few weeks ago, back in August), I think that the minimum recommended amount was $25USD, but the actual minimum was $10USD.

There are a few factors to remember about SETI and donating. First off, donating with a CC, there is automatically a percentage taken by the CC company. Now your $10 donation is approximately $9.75. Second, you are donating actually to the whole school Berkeley when you donate to SETI, so they take a percentage (of which I heard varying amounts), now your $9.75 is cut even more. So the bookkeeping for a small amount is nearly not worth it. Anything less than $10, and it's definitely not worth it.

And the email-address used when making your donation has to be the same as the email-address on your SETI account.

How did you make your donation? Through the SETI link, or through the PayPal link?

True. For best choice in removing the "middle man", just write a check for your donation amount and mail to to SETI. I believe there is a check option on the donation web page. That at least cuts out the credit card companies and PayPal.

I made it through the SETI link with a Visa check card. I got my thank you/receipt card a month ago. I have sent an email to the donors link and got no reply. I just sent them another email this morning. I guess they just don't like me. :(

PS: The transaction cleared with no problem So the do like my money. :)

I think they have a script they run occasionally to clean up things like this but with Matt on vacation and Eric busy with the server and database problems they probably just haven't had time to manually go in and add it. The "Volunteer Tester" tag is supposed to be automatic also, but it took nearly a year to get mine!

I think the minimum reccomended donation is about a thousand dollars, but it is only a reccomendation. LOL.

Seriously though, the 'green star' bit has to be given a top priority!!
There is not much left if you cannot at least give a tip of the hat to those who have risen above the rhetoric of others and acutally donated hard cash to the cause.

But the kitties and I will give you a tip of the hat from ourselves.
Take it as a token until the green star arrrives!

Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check on your account page to make certain that donations are not anonymous. Anonymous donations turn off the green star.

Nope, not anonymous. Nothing on the donations page either even though I've received the thank you/receipt card in the mail. I don't know what they are up to.

I believe that the rules still require a check to go through the central donations office. Their overhead is pretty low but I don't think you can avoid it completely.

Contributing hardware is an interesting alternative. It's difficult to imagine how the front office could extract its % of that. OTOH we should all be happy that the school provides power, heat, air conditioning, and room for the project. Those services are essential and effectively funded out of the portion of cash donations not sent on to the project.

The other thing SETI@Home gets by going through central donations: accountability. No one can accuse them of cashing a check and then using it for personal gains.

I know the vast majority of us wouldn't care (and in fact some have sent money earmarked as "party money") but it only takes one wackadoo to create much legal hassle.

Unless 'they' say "Give me/us 'X' memory sticks out of 'Y' you receive."

You mean all 'non-allocated' money doesn't automatically default to Party Money?

They don't have enough money available to have any that is needed for something to keep the project running.
