I think I've tried everything mentioned in most of the Posts. This thing seems to be junk and I'm about to go back to CLASSIC until forced to change! All it does is lock my machine or dial endlesly. |

Jim, BOINC 4.05 has a serious problem with Win 9x and ME, and perhaps other Win OS's. Use Pascal's links, get a newer version on BOINC, and install it. Be aware that versions beyond 4.05 are still alpha-test versions, run them at your own risk. The new versions can be installed on top of the 4.05 version without any problems. When firt run, the new version will detect a version change and run the benchmarks, then it picks up where the previous version left off, including any WU's you might have already downloaded. The one of the symptoms is that the machine locks up requiring a hard reset or power-cycle to recover the machine. This seems to be your problem. Another symptom is that the machine gets slower and slower, as indicated by the mouse responding very slowly, to the point the mouse cursor can barely be moved. BOINC 4.06, and later, solves these problems. Some have been able to Ctrl-Alt-Del and cancel 'Boinc_gui', others can't get C-A-D to respond either. If you can cancel 'Boinc_gui', the machine will return to normal functioning. I'm running 4.07 on my Win98SE machine. I have had no problems with it. I'm even running 4.07 as my screen saver, but don't use a password on it. I don't know if the problems with setting a password on the BOINC screen saver have been fixed yet. I have not gone to 4.08 because of other peoples reports of problems with 4.08. When the server is up and the scheduler is running, I have no problems uploading and reporting results, downloading new WU's, or getting credits for the WU's validated. BTW, I'm on my a LAN, and don't currently use a MODEM, so I don't know how any version of BOINC works with MODEMs. Some have reported problems with dial up connections. If you experience problems in this area, use File-->Disable BOINC Network Access. When you have completed WU's, uncheck this, dial up, and manually update the project. For some reason, the project heads have decided NOT to put a notice on the download page warning that version 4.05 (the only one available on that page) has SERIOUS PROBLEMS working with Win98 and WinME. If they just placed a warning on that page, new people would be immediately aware that there are problems and wouldn't hose up their systems. |
