I now have uninstalled BOINC and installed to a new directory, there is no problem connecting. So I'm going to assume that one of the projects is causing the problem.

Is there anyway to transfer the work over from the previous install, I want to do one project at a time to see if I can get it to disconnect?

The correct way to install in a new directory.

1) STOP BOINC.
2) Move the entire directory tree to the new location.
3) Install the new version in the new location.

If you skip step 2, you are going to have a very difficult time recovering those WUs. The only way is major surgery of client_state.xml.

Is it possible to manualy stop a project?

The projects are not listed because the manager is not attached, I have to stop them by editing files in the BOINC directory.

When one of my computers did the same thing as Pawly's, I installed BOINC to a different directory and attached to one project. It worked in the new directory so then I got to thinking it must be a project that we have in common on both our computers that I don't have on any other computer. After eliminating a couple of possibilities I found it to be vtu@home, they recently moved to a new site and they are a test project after all.

Here is how I fixed it:

Shut down BOINC

Go to your BOINC directory, in the project folder is a folder for vtu, it should have part of the url in it (boinc.vtu.lt_vtuathome). Move or rename the folder. I put '.tmp' at the end of the name.

In the BOINC directory there are 7 files:
account_boinc.vtu.lt_vtuathome.xml
job_log_boinc.vtu.lt_vtuathome
job_log_boinc.vtu.lt_vtuathome.txt
master_boinc.vtu.lt_vtuathome.xml
sched_reply_boinc.vtu.lt_vtuathome.xml
sched_request_boinc.vtu.lt_vtuathome.xml
statistics_boinc.vtu.lt_vtuathome.xml

rename them as well.

Start BOINC up, it should work now. I deleted the directory and files so I won't be able to recover the WUs, I also lost a few others experimenting but its all working now.

Hey there guys, sorry it took me so long to get back to this.

I saw Grizz's fix the other day and gave it a try. Only problem was I had VTU wu's completed and in the queue but no VTU folder in the BOINC directory. ??? Weird. Anyway I was real busy the last couple of days and had left the comp off. When I powered up this afternoon I soon realized BOINC hadn't disconnected itself! Fixed and I didn't have to do anything!! WOOHOO!! lol

Upon closer examination, it looks like the wu's were overdue and recalled which seems to have cleared things up. Except I can't detach VTU to reattach with the correct url. The manager won't allow me the option.

EDIT - also. I'm still running 5.10.19 , is it okay to leave it be?

You can continue with 5.10.19 if you like. It's just one of the final versions tested before 5.10.20 was released. To go back to 5.10.20:

1) in boinc manager, click "file", then "exit".

2) run the 5.10.20 installer

that's it.

it won't cause loss of current work.

I've seen a couple more reports of boinc crashing in the mail lists. I suspect it's project or comms related. It hasn't been found yet. I expect to see more similar reports over time, so your problems will eventually help find this.
