I'M TIRED OF TRYING TO CONNECT AND RECONNECT AND RECONNECT AND RECONNECT TO REPORT FINISHED PROJECTS AND GET NEW PROJECTS THE CONNECTIONS PROBLEMS ARE TO THE POINT THAT I'M THINKING OF QUITTING SETI ALL TOGETHER. I UNDERSTAND THE ONCE IN A WHILE PROBLEMS, BUT THIS IS ONGOING AND BOTHERSOME. I COME HOME FROM WORK CHECK MY STATS AND END UP HAVING TO TRY TO CONNECT TO THE SERVER TO REPORT A FINISHED PROJECT OR 2 OR ATTEMPT TO DOWNLOAD NEW WORK. IT'S STUPID TO WASTE ARE COMPUTERS AND OUR RESOURCES IF THIS IS THE WAY IT'S GOING BE. THERES 25 CENTS WORTH OF MY 2 CENTS WORTH. I CAN NOT BE THE ONLY PERSON UNHAPPY WITH THE CONNECTIVITY PROBLEMS. ____________ |

Dude.....use decaf...and lower case. Maybe it's time more people got mad with the SETI project wasting our time and resources while showing it's flaws. |

Are you paying Berkeley for support? Have you contributed? This is a volunteer scientific effort. Feel free to un-volunteer if your idle-cycles are so very valuable. ![]() |

SETI isn't the only project out there. There are a lot of worthy ones. Go find a new one, and allow your computers to stay busy. No need to fret over something YOU can not control. SETI is a shoestring budget, with only a handful of people. They have gotten NEW WORK (which everyone was yelling they wanted), but this new work is causing issues that need to be fixed. It may take several weeks before they get all their ducks in a row again. My computers are busy. They crunch data all day and night, without an issue. I do not worry about no work, since I always have work. You have volunteered to do this project. It will go on (if there is enough $) with or without you. Threatening to leave hurts no one. If you want to leave, that's your choice. Why tell us about it? SETI's going to continue on. Life is full of ups and downs. People just need to learn to live with them. Especially ones like this which do not hurt you if you are not doing work (actually you are probably saving electricity), and will return when it is fixed. ![]() My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |

I'M TIRED OF TRYING TO CONNECT AND RECONNECT AND ... CONNECTIVITY PROBLEMS. I'm not going to condone the caps things, but I do agree with him on the connectivity issues. Maybe it's an issue with our BOINC download. I don't know. The only thing I know for sure is that when a project is 100% it sits and "tries" to upload and can't. The only time it can is when I go to the Project tab and click "Update." Even "Retry communications" on the Advanced tab doesn't work. Now I'm having an issue where it won't upload, process or download at all. I'll explore that another way. Please have someone look into the problem BOTH of us are having. I'm running BOINC 5.8.16. Thanks! http://www.agedwards.com/fc/andrew.wilkin |

No need to fret over something YOU can not control. what seems to be forgotten here are a few things, My God given right to bitch and moan when I'm unhappy with something, it is also important to get your feelings out to those that run SETI to know people are unhappy and may walk away, and walking away takes possible donations away with it. Yes I volunteered and Yes I believe in the process, and Yes I Believe in the right to Bitch, my lady friends do it all the time why not Me? :) |

Yes I volunteered and Yes I believe in the process, and Yes I Believe in the right to -----, my lady friends do it all the time why not Me? :) I don't know... a few obvious reasons come to mind. Constructive criticism works best. Complaining sounds immature. Read around and know they are working on it. What good does it do to complain if they're already aware of the problem and are working as hard as they can to fix it. Threating/promising to leave a volunteer project, and taking away potential donations because they can't afford good hardware in the first place does nothing to encourage them to do better. Plus, most people don't respond well to threats. Most are inclined to tell you to just leave, especially if you are not helping the situation what-so-ever. Patience is a virtue (in short supply every time there's a problem). When the servers are fixed, you will get through easily. Read and note that the project has announced that there will be times when they have no workunits or server problems. They have actively encouraged joining other projects if you do not want to waste electricity. If you choose not to join another project, that is your choice, but you cannot hold SETI@Home responsible for your choices. Pick a reason, any reason. They're all good ones. |

Yes I volunteered and Yes I believe in the process, and Yes I Believe in the right to -----, my lady friends do it all the time why not Me? :) It does seem everyone has an opinion on the right way and the wrong way to do things. I'm credited with being a volunteer @ SETI for 6+ years, and I dare anyone to find a post from Me on these boards before today. In those years I haven't complained once about anything, today I decided too, My free will, My Option and My own Judgement. if I was out to make Myself seem important would I not be posted all over the place in these forums? if I don't care why stay and why boardcast my feelings... Atleast in the US we can share oir feelings |

It does seem everyone has an opinion on the right way and the wrong way to do things. Are you justifying your actions to me or yourself? PS - I'm in the US as well. Yes, you have the freedom of expression, but it takes a wise person to know when to use it and when to give it a rest. Just because you have a right, doesn't mean you should exercise it. |

I am amazed at how many people want to yell and scream about the people at Berkeley when they, themselves, contribute to the problem. Set your cache to a reasonable amount of work (four to five days) and LEAVE IT ALONE!!! The system is perfectly capable, in ninety-nine percent of all cases, of handling things for itself. It does need your intervention if you set it up properly. Furthermore, your intervention usually makes things WORSE! Everytime you force a connection it puts extra strain on an already strained system. In case you have not been reading the homepage, the project is currently in a state of transition between the Classic data and the data from the new multi-beam receiver. There are going to be problems with any system during such a drastic change. In additon, this is an all volunteer project; you cannot expect enterprise level uptime and support from a project that struggles daily to keep the lights on and pay the bills. As for your God given right to bitch...it is MY God given right to COMPLETELY ignore you when you do so. |

Yes SETI isn't the only project - but I still think, long-term it is the most worthwhile. Which is why I'm also angry - though not "SHOUTING" - yet. But, I've now got EIGHT (8) sets of data trying to download, and nothing happens. Here in the UK, I can't just leave the line up, and hope for the best - it costs me in bytespace-time (if you see what I mean) on my 'phone line. Support for SETI is not only financial it is moral and contributory in doing the calculations, and paying the 'phone bills. So will someone PLEASE fix this problem, a.s.a.p. ....... |

Yes SETI isn't the only project - but I still think, long-term it is the most worthwhile. Yes, I agree that support is not only financial but also moral and personally expensive. My sincere suggestion is that, if it's costing you money to dial-in, and you don't want to crunch another project, it would be better to stay off-line for few days. Keep looking at the forum, especially the Technical News and Number Crunching forums for a status update on the resolution of the problem. If you think, nobody is trying to fix it, then you have to remember, that this is not a commercial service....there are just 2 members of staff trying to fight the fire with limited financial and technical resources. You can read what one of the project staff had to day yesterday about the probelm.....Matt |

Yes SETI isn't the only project - but I still think, long-term it is the most worthwhile. Seems my first post was an hour before your last post in the technical section. and I'm not trying to be a smartaleck or anything like that, I posted the message to blow off steam about things not working as they have in the past. it is fustrating to sit down at the computer everyday and hve BOINC tell me I need to go to the advanced section and do blah blah, when I know my connection is steady and solid, and thats what lead to the original post, and they fact that I'm still here and replying to messages and still running the SETI project, should say something even will all abuse heaped on me for being fustrated. Enjoy. |

should say something even will all abuse heaped on me for being fustrated. No one is abusing you. We're trying to tell you to calm down, we're all in the same boat and we're all having problems connecting. It will clear up as soon as they get it fixed. |

I am currently having problems downlaoding work units too. Though i am not here to say about that. What i wanted to say is that these things happen from time to time. Welcome to the world of computers and internet. No one ever said it would run smoothly all of the time, because it doesn't. That's computers for you! Give the guys at SETI a chance to sort out the problems with the limited resources they have. I personally think that they do a fantastic job, given the fact that they take time out of their personal lives at weekends to go into the server room and sort out problems. They could just leave it for the 9am-5pm routine, but they don't. Just be patient and things will get better! :o) Life Is Too Short To Worry About The Little Things ![]() |

It's doing it again! After two or three days working apparently wewll, the download problems seem to have recurred. Currently I've got NINE sets of data waiting to download, and it is picking up very erratically, if at all ..... |

It's doing it again! good thing you didn't use capital letters to express your fustration, you might get berated and told to calm down....... good luck |

It's doing it again! I wish you'd get off it. You were never berated and being told to calm down had little to do with your capitol letters and more to do with the way you were expressing yourself. |
