I have wondered how much it pained Vai to play that part, 'cuz it's no doubt he could play that lick.

I’ll likely get shot for this, but I’ve never cared for Vai. Great technique, good showman, no soul, IMHO of course :)

Oh, I don't disagree. All tech and no soul. Nice flash though. Might say the same for Satriani. Master the instrument, but have nothing to play on it.

About soul, a tribute to one of the kindest and nicest, and most gentle souls in rock music:

Rest in peace, George Harrison.

Funny, nobody have mentioned George's good friend Eric Clapton in this thread yet?

I am so happy with the response to my thread, and the things that you all have shared with me and others. The guitar is an instrument that I have dreamed of mastering, but it is not to be. I took piano lessons at the age of 15, but it didn't work out so well. I had visions of being Jerry Lee Lewis. Oh well, that sixtys stuff just really had me hooked.
Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for starting this thread, msattler! The possibilities and nearly endless.

If I were to worship a rock guitar god (unlikely, but ya never know), it would be David Gilmour.

How about Bass guitar? (And a little more from God as well)

One of These Days

Pointless Personal Details: I saw this tour when it was in Toronto. My very first rock concert (up to this point most of my musical interest was classical). Talk about culture shock!

Even from the nose-bleed section it was impressive.

Lots of great guitarists mentioned so far.

Malmsteen...Vai ( I agree that he is too tech centered instead of using his soul, but very talented anyway )...Satriani....even Slash.....

One that hasn't been mentioned, however....is Zakk Wylde. This guy is VERY good.

Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society

* fair warning....this may not be the predominant music style for the folks here....but it's what I listen to and I couldn't see Zakk getting passed up. :-) *

Fair enough but how about Chris Isaak? Much more my style. Nice Gretch guitar.

EDIT...The last choice was a little racy.

It sounds like Ozzy vocals because he plays lead for Ozzy. Ozzy discovered him when he was 18. :-)

Ok folks. Fortunately...I found another song by Zakk that isn't NEARLY as heavy as the one I previously posted.

This is an accoustic song from the CD Book Of Shadows.

Give it a try...I promise that it's kitty friendly. :-)

Way Beyond Empty

Oh...I know the solo is nothing spectacular...but like I said...it's accoustic....lol

Oh, no offense taken! In my younger days, I was very much into the early Black Sabbath stuff, early AC/DC (Let there be Rock) is still great (when they were blues-based, before Bon Scott died), and very early Judas Priest.
