Message 615727 - Posted: 6 Aug 2007, 15:14:32 UTC - in response to Message 615724.

I am back from holiday. I hope all is fine here!

WOOHOO! Heyas Champ!!!

And welcome back from your vacation. I hope that you and the family had a wonderful time!

Maybe you can tell us where you've been and whether you liked it there. Any pics?

I went with my family to southern Sweden. Only rain. No swimming in the eastern sea. So we went to a couple of fun parks. (Only for kids) Nothing spectacular. Between the rain´s we walk through the forest. So, i have not pic´s which are worth to post. :-((((

Awww! How disappointing for you, Champ. I'm truly sorry to hear that. :(

I hope you at least got a real good rest and a chance to enjoy some "Family Time" with your lovely wife and son. I wonder what I would do in those circumstances. I'd probably play a lot of cards and maybe a family board game like Monopoly (do they have that in Germany?)

Sure we have and we did. We played a few of these game and i have tried to play with my son poker. He lost all his pocked money, till he is 18.

But i am now well rested. Ready for the boards and the work.

Attaway Champ! I know you really needed the rest, so that's good to hear. :))

It's good for your son to learn early on that you don't just win, with poker. LOL

Hey Hey, Pawly!

Good to see you, Bud!!!

Thanks for reminding me about the new Canadian content. Maybe some of that should be repeated in the Canuck forum? Your visit here also reminds me that I should visit the "Oh Canada" forums, it's been a while since I checked in. I'll do that later today. :)

Here's a thermo with fresh brewed coffee for you here.

Welcome back, Champ. Yes, Scandinavia can be disappointing weather-wise, you never know what to expect. And the past 4 weeks have been extreme weather-wise, with lots and lots of rain and very heavy almost stormy winds. But now where the holidays are over, the warm and sunny weather has returned. That's the norm here.

Anyway, you had a lot of quality time with your family, sometimes too much quality, I guess? ;-D

And hi Pawly, I'll open your post in the vid thread to see and hear the songs. Our taste in music is almost alike. :-D

Technology is just starting to worm its way deeply into our lives...

You watch us, We watch you.

Eyebox2 lets billboards
look back at viewers
Ontario company develops device to aid marketers

VITO PILIECI
TCANWEST NEWS SERVICE

OTTAWA echnology from a Kingston, Ont., company could soon allow billboards, posters and other advertising displays to look back at you and record your interest in the products they’re flogging.

Xuuk Inc., a tiny firm on the campus of Queen’s University, has developed a device that monitors how many people have looked at an advertisement. Those statistics can be reported to marketers to tell them if their campaign is a success.

“Everyone is pushing ads out, and they are installing these signs like plasma screens that are pushing out all this digital content,” said Roel Vertegaal, director of the Human Media Lab at Queen’s and chief executive of Xuuk. “But they don’t know if customers are looking.”

Installed under an ad, Xuuk’s Eyebox2 device records not only the number of views, but when they’re received. This could lead to companies tailoring the content of flatscreen TVs or rotating billboards to the time of day.

The technology could also allow advertisers to pick and choose where they will place an ad, opting only for locations where they are guaranteed a certain number of lookers.

“Customers can actually say: ‘I want 1,000 eyeballs. Get me to a place that has 1,000 eyeballs,’ ” said Vertegaal. “It’s about getting someone’s attention and selling someone’s attention.”

Vertegaal has been working on the technology for years. Also involved in the project is Changuk Sohn, a researcher at Queen’s and an expert in photography.

The device works like a digital camera. Pulses of infrared light flashes that cannot be seen by the naked eye create the infrared equivalent of what many home photographers know as “red eye.”

The number and time of red-eye exposures are recorded. The device will pick up the eyes of anyone within 10 metres. Xuuk sells the Eyebox2 for $999, but Vertegaal hopes to eventually bring the price below $100.

Mark Eden, senior vice-president of the Marketing Store, an ad agency, said the device will be a useful tool for marketers. However, he cautioned that companies could put too much focus on location-based advertising.

“Being able to achieve verifiable impressions on outdoor or indoor signage is only part of the marketing equation,” he said. “If a plumbing company put a sign in New York Times Square, it wouldn’t matter how many registered impressions the plumbing billboard received, because Times Square isn’t the right venue for plumbing.”

Xuuk’s technology was officially revealed at Google Inc.’ s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., earlier this month. Officials from the popular search engine had heard about the Eyebox2 and just had to see it in action.

“They invited me to give a talk,” said Vertegaal, adding Google is interested in using the technology to examine how people look at websites, with a goal of improving their design.

Since then, “the phone is ringing off the hook.” Several large advertising firms want demonstrations of Xuuk’s technology, Vertegaal said.

While he believes the Eyebox2 will prove a boon to advertisers, he has higher aspirations for the device. He believes the technology could eventually be used to allow computer users to navigate their computer screen with their eyes. The device will be like a mouse for the eyeball. Look to the left, the pointer moves in the direction. Blink twice and it acts as a double click.

Similar tracking systems using different technology have been tried elsewhere, with mixed results.

“But at $1,000, you are not going to get these into the home,” he said. “We needed a market that would help to reduce the price through volume.”
