You either love or hate him:

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Akhiyan Udeek Diyan

Rough Translation:

O my friend, come to my home,
I’ll welcome you with Open arms

My eyes are longing to see you,
my heart pines for you

Ever since you have been cross with me,
even the crows have fallen silent on my threshold

All the joys have vanished,
the merriment’s are gone

Today I have learnt the meaning of the parting

O my friend, without you I’m lonely
What have you there where you are dwelling?

I go up and down the terrace to look for you
My soul is without peace and the eyes are devoid of patience

I cannot forget your handsome countenance
the love torments me and I cry out for you

O my love, I beg you to come,
and then don’t leave me you have won, I’ve lost

Come to my abode
My heart cries out for you to come

If the ascetic comes to me,
all the quarrels will end and I’ll embrace him with

all the formalities

O Buleh Shah, at last, my beloved has arrived
He has shaken the threshold of my abode

And he has conquered my heart
Though he has come in disguise yet he has captured my heart

Though He is the Creator but He has come to me in human form

My heart has been conquered and I still pine for love.

Love or hate him?

I've got a couple of his Cd's, but I haven't played 'em for quite a while.

I get all Sufi sometimes and sit on the floor and wave my hands around like a looney.

I try and play my tablas but with all the hand waving I just seem to make the dust swirl..

16th August.

In remembrance of a teacher, singer, poet and musician of the soul:

Ten years ago today Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan died on Saturday 16th August 1997 Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan after a lifetime of singing Qawwali.

One of my favourite softer Nusrat tunes:

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Sanu Ek Pal Chain.

Born on 13th October 1948 in Faisalabad Pakistan he followed his fathers tradition of singing and music. His ancestral family's devotion to singing and Qawwali stretches back unbroken for six centuries.

He sang Qawwali ("utterance"), the Sufi music of India and Pakistan.

Qawwali is ecstatic and spiritual poetry entwined in music and voice that expresses mystical love and the longing for a union with the divine. Nusrat did this through his music and singing.

Sufism try's to attain truth and oneness with God by direct personal experience in ones lifetime here and now and not simply after death or judgment.

The 13th century Sufi musician and poet Amir Khusrau (The "father of qawwali") said that "music was the fire that burnt heart and soul."

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan often repeats phrases over and over again that resonated with the listener until an ecstatic state is reached.

At that moment many find something quite spiritual and personal.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan expresses that we should not be slaves to reason.

For me even just Nusrat's hypnotic music and expressive vocalisations take us away from the need to find reason and towards a sense of connection with something at times passionate and at other times serene.

Thanks for posting this,

I've never heard of him but I like the music. Does he do any traditional music? I collect ancient music here:

Most of his songs are from the ancient tradition of Qawwali but Nusrat is known for making the style and sound modern and popular.

That is a nice collection you have made.

Are you looking for exact renditions of older music, chants and songs or are modern interpretations ('in the style of') OK to?

I quite like Karnatic music. (If you like playing guitar there is a Karnatic Guitar Forum.)

There is a great talk on YouTube as an Introduction to Raaga (Yaman). (Raga)

I'll take a look around and see what I might be able to add.
