I am running Seti at about 92% and a few other projects at about 1.85% each.

The seti long term debt increases each time the low precentage project gets over worked because one work unit can cause overworking. This is ok.

The problem occurs when the overworked project is delayed. As long as it doesn't have a work unit, the overworked project will not increase its negative load term debt. Likewise Seti cannot decrease its long term debt.

This causes the Seti long term debt to keep increasing, because at least one other project will load a work unit. When only Seti is running the long term debt doesn't even move.

My seti long term debt is now more than 511,000s.

This has been this way for over two months now.

Problems with long-term debt can arise when a project runs out of work. Things then get out of proportion. Perhaps try to keep at least some work available for each project. And with this established, wipe all your long-term debts and start again either by manually editing the Client State file while Boinc is not running, or use the program Boinc Debt Viewer to do it for you.
If you can maintain some work for each project, the long-term debts will always equal the short-term.

Problems with long-term debt can arise when a project runs out of work.

If I recall correctly, that was fixed in the more recent BOINC clients. LTD should no longer grow if the project has no work.

There are 2 third party apps which I find very useful for monitoring and managing BOINC.

Boincview is very useful for managing one or more hosts on one or more projects. Very powerful tool.

BoincDV. BOINC Debt Viewer is a simple tool which allows you to reset LTD with a single mouse click. Powerful but simple. I used it recently to clear my SETI LTD which was still high after last months outage.

I currently run 3 projects at equal resource share on one PC, 2 projects on my slow PC.

That is the problem! If a project has no work the debt doesn't go up or down.
It should be constant only when a project is down or no work available. The only way to reduce the debt is when a project has no work and is being delayed.

The idea for long term debt was that if it was negative the project wouldn't get work and then it would grow. Now it stays constant if the project doesn't have work.

Because my other projects have low duty (2%) , they always go to high priority and cause their long term debt to go very negative.

I use BoincView.

Thanks.

Ok, I'm lost, lol. What is LTD, I'm so confused :)

EDIT: Ok, I found this on WIKI which explains it but I didn't notice where the debit is shown on BOINC, ie., on my computer. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I went online and downloaded the program but I can't seem to get it to work, does it need to be downloaded into the BOINC directory? The instructions seemed to suggest it coule be downloaded into a seperated directory. Maybe I just can't figure out how to configure it, lol.

I set up a separate directory for it, and just put all the files in there. Then you need to set up the computers, but can you get it to the point where it will even load?
You downloaded a zip file, right? And then extracted all the files into some directory? I just made a \\Program Files\\BoincView directory and put them in there. So if you've already done that, and then executed boincview.exe, what happens then?

-Dave

[Edit] I see you're running Vista on one of your boxes, is that the one you're trying to put it on? If so, I don't think you necessarily want it in \\Program Files\\, from what I've heard... Maybe put it on the XP box instead?
(not currently running vista myself, so can't experiment...)

Have you used BOINC Manager to control hosts remotely?

Every BOINC installation contains a file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg. You can open this with Notepad.

See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/gui_rpc_auth.php for offical instructions about remote control. If you read this in conjunction with http://boincview.amanheis.de/?page=installation it should be fairly painless.

One tip I discovered if you want to quickly switch between hosts in BOINC Manager is to make the password for all hosts the same.

Please take care to choose a good password, BOINC creates a strong password by default.

I am running it on Vista with in the Program directory that I called BoincView.

When I run it, it opens and I have the page but it doesn't recognize the host computer, I went into what appears to be the setup for the host computer and I'm a little confused on what it wants in some of the boxes.

I would have thought that the program would automatically find what it needs on the host vs remotes where you need the ip address, etc.

I'm not real tech., so I'm sure the issue is on my end (me!) lol.

I have a remote computer that I will set up but at this point I'm just trying to get it to recognize the host computer.

Every BOINC installation contains a file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg. You can open this with Notepad.

I'll take a look a that file and see if I can make anything out of it.

(edit)I opened that file up and it had one entry, a long combination of number and letters, what do I do with that?(eoe)

See http://boinc.berkeley.edu/gui_rpc_auth.php for offical instructions about remote control. If you read this in conjunction with http://boincview.amanheis.de/?page=installation it should be fairly painless.

I'll check these out too, the instructions from the site I downloaded it from was lacking to say the least, something like "...after downloading and opening, set up your computer...". Duh, how about some specifics, lol.
(edit)The instructions for the first site doesn't appear to give "setup" information and the second site is the one I mentioned about "....set up your computer..." but no specific information - I guess they assume I know what they want or I should know.

That long string of letters and numbers is the default BOINC password. You can change it if you want or just copy into the appropriate box in BoincView. I suggest you stay with the default to start with, otherwise the BOINC Manager may lose communication with the BOINC Core Client.

I have only used BoincView on Win XP and 98, I beleive Vista is a bit more complicated. You could try the BoincView forums, or someone else here may have used BV on Vista.

Did you get the software installed but not configured or was it a problem in the installation part.

Regards, Keith

[EDIT]

I've just re-read your post, I see you did get it installed but not configured.

What color is the BoincView icon on the System Tray by the clock? It changes color according to status:

Green is good.
White means not communicating.
Violet means tasks uploading or downloading.
Red means a task has errored.

There may be other colors but those are the main ones.

I beleive the software was written by a native German speaker.

OK, I tried the BOINC Debt Viewer program and I see a problem:

  • Rosetta: STD=0, LTD=-4.5 million, Share=50 (was 100)
  • Einstein: STD=86400, LTD=-1.3 million, Share=25 (was 50)
  • SETI: STD=-86400, LTD=5.9 million, Share=25 (was 50)

The project mix of late has been zero or one Rosetta projects (which I was largely running when SETI was down), one Einstein project (sometimes two, but only for a short overlap while one was finishing up), and three SETI projects (sometimes even four, when SETI preloads the next one and whatever else is running is suspended).

It looks to me like my Share values were overcommitted (representing 200% of my available CPU time). So, with four hyperthread CPUs going, the STD for Einstein was +86400 (a 50 share would have implied two CPUs worth of time and it only received one CPU worth of time, so it came up short one CPU worth of time) and the STD for SETI was -86400 (a share of 50 would have implied two CPUs worth; it got 3 CPUs worth, so it is one CPU worth ahead of the game).

I don't know why the Rosetta STD value was zero. I finished a Rosetta work unit yesterday, but it did not fetch another, presumably due to the LTD. It would seem to me that if no Rosetta work is running, there should be some adjustment in the STD value, particularly since I gave Rosetta the largest Share value.

Anyway, I've adjusted my Share values for each project to total 100 instead of 200 and we will see what impact this has on the STD and LTD values.

But I wanted to mention this since if others are running with overcommitted Share values, that may be skewing the STD and LTD numbers. I would consider this a bug in the BOINC debt calculation (the failure to scale the Share values properly when computing the debt).

But I'm really just guessing here, and I will defer to the rest of you to let me know if you think this is really a BOINC bug that ought to be reported (I'm running BOINC 5.8.16 on Windows XP for whatever that is worth).

That is why ltd was created. It will keep track so your computer does exactly the sharing that is defined by your resource share values.

If a project has a large negative ltd then is has used to much CPU time and it should not run a wu for a long time until the ltd gets positive.

Here lies the problem, the ltd doesn't change anymore when a project has no wu.
This bug was created when a change was made to stop ltd for a project that was offline.

std is used for the context switching between projects that are currently running.

I would try that to start with.

This thread has drifted a bit off the original topic. I suggest that you start a new one either here or in the Q&A Windows forum if that does not work. A thread title like BoincView with Windows Vista would probably be good.

As I wrote earlier, I have not used Vista, but I have read a bit about it and I know that BOINC does have some "issues" with Vista, this could be one of them.

I did Google BoincView Vista and got about 9000 hits, but I only looked at the first 2 or 3.

Good Luck, Keith

For anybody who might be interested, I'm running BOINC as a service under Windows XP, so to clear the debt counters I needed to suspend processing, then stop the BOINC service before running the BoincDV program to reset the debt.

After restarting the service and resuming BOINC processing, the first thing that happened is my computer fetched another Rosetta work unit, so I presume I'm back to normal state. And the preliminary (short term) results from the BoincDV program at least look rational.
