Whatever happened to the "kinder, gentler" Woody we were beginning to like? > > > I can't see ANYONE saying that cellphone stats are more important > than > > getting > > > the background servers working and keeping all 20k of us still left > > informed! > > > (the last part is important!) > > > > > > > > Its not unless they just got a wireless sponser. > > > > "These stats are brought to you by T-Mobile. It's based on the idea that a more detailed news item would be less ambiguous. If there is some finite probability that any given word will be misinterpreted, then doubling the number of words just doubles the likelihood that someone will misinterpret the article as a whole. ... and it seems that we have plenty of empirical evidence right here. Certainly if every single news item, no matter how benign, is subject to such scrutiny then they're probably off with __less__ news, not more. |

Well, now that we have THAT fixed, can we please think about turning back on the ability to check results data via the Web site, please? (note to BOINC devs - the population of sah users/contributors who can use cell phone stats can be shown to be strictly less than the population which can use Web-based stats, since every one has a computer, but at least one does not have a cell phone - that would be me. just fyi) Dave |

So, what you're saying Woody is that in your career, you've never ever run up against a problem that was so difficult that you wondered (privately) if you'd be able to solve it? If so, then you wouldn't understand the value of some small success when things are looking bleak. > > One of my mentors calls this kind of thing a "success exercise" -- when > you > > need to do something good just to prove that everything isn't bad. > > I don't know if you're in the US, but that's what Geiko uses in their ads... > > "but I saved 15% on my car insurance" > > In the case of an ad, it might work... Shesh, I try to relax a little tonight and see what happens. Per the checkin notes of the feature: David 9 Sept 2004 - Added support for stats access via WAP (for cell phones) (from Carl Christensen) html/ inc/ userw.inc wap.inc user/ opsw.php userw.php So this feature was actually developed by Carl Christensen, who is the project lead at CPDN. Today I was working on the client-side CPU scheduler, and David was working on the validator. Several issues had to be resolved from Jeff's changes, otherwise we wouldn't had been any better off. ----- Rom BOINC Development Team, U.C. Berkeley |

Most of this thread and peoples concerns just disapear then. I'm sorry but I just do not understand why information cannot be put on the front page. People are interested, they feel part of the project and in order for that to happen they need to know what is going on at base. Just soem thoughts :) Neil |

Why would anyone want to access their stats on a mobile phone. It defies belief. Having said that "each to his own" |

> I think Woody has a valid point here. Has he? If his assumptions were right maybe, but again he started writing right before he finished reading. > Personally It seems to be running better > and I am hopeful things will continue to improve.... but time would probably > be better spent on other areas than cell phone data display at the moment. The BOINC developers do everything to stabilize and improve the whole framework. The only time they spend on this feature was to check it in, the programmming was done by others. And there is no reason why other developers shouldn't improve other parts of the BOINC framework and then note this in the news. --- KEINE PANIK |

And I'm using my wap page to check for credit, I may check it from every where and it helps me a lot. I don't have to be at home or at work to see if WEB page works, it was a few times when It was shuted down. In that case I don't have to check my crunching PC's. I have made a WAp page to reading news from main page. Also I see it usefull, to check for that even when I'm in pub and drinking a beer. Because it is an evening here in Slovakia and it is a morning in Berkeley, which can caus some new news posted. And I have many reason to use such a check from cell phone. If you don't like, don't use it. Link to read news from main page (shows 1st 3 items from any RSS Feed, feed address is in link, just change it to read another feed): http://slavko.sk/wap/rssread/Default.aspx?url=http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/rss_main.php Link to my statistics wap page I already posted in this thread.
