Message 582728 - Posted: 7 Jun 2007, 3:58:17 UTC - in response to Message 582610.

Sometimes I see free floating members on SETI and think it would be nice they joined my team.. Unless I was already in general communication with them I would never try to solicite.
I've only had one bring it up and it was the same, I was already in communication with that person.
We have the "Team Recruitment Center" for such advertisements.
It's only unacceptable because that is the evolving reaction/opinion of people here in response to such solicitations. Perhaps on some other forum, people would not mind. But, since people here generally agree it should not be done, then this should indeed be addressed.

Pardon me sir,
Who agrees? Was there a vote I missed? lol I sent a Invitation (you would call it recruitment) to a Person on this Forum. They were very pleased that I would take the time to type out a personal message to them and quickly joined my Team.

May I suggest that if you get a PM you don't like, that you delete it. If the user persists in sending the same mail repeatedly, abusive or not, you report this behavior to the SETImods or Admin. Just a thought.

I didn't begin the discussion and the discussion did not begin tonight.
KM has addressed it in a long post at the Calm Chaos forums.
A thread here a few days back was posted by a team founder as well. Something about BOINC UK being confused for UK BOINC or vice versa and how people from the other team were using PMs to recruit.
A fair number of people have mentioned their dislike for it both in this thread, in PMs and on other forums.
As already mentioned, though, if it is just part of an ongoing larger discussion, then people do not seem to mind it.
If we find a lot of people do not mind it after all, we will probably learn this by other people making posts about it in this thread.
Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes.

I see that this is in part or at least a response to me or the next poster (SARGE).

I understood Sarge to be saying he kind of agreed with my sentiment but he suggested it all depended on the outcome of general community feelings.

No Vote... Just a general eye for how poeple feel.

I agree that if someone gets the odd post they dislike then they should just ignore or delete it... but some have said they get much more than this.

These forums have no voting or volunteering ethics. We are left with just members who propose or elect to try things out.

I for one support members who try.. I even support them in failing.

No pardons or excuses.

What else do we have?

It worked and that was a success. Did you spam them or had you had previous PMs or contact with them?..

I would not like an unsolicited PM or one that was not a single personalised mailing.

I suspect I am not alone.

I have one of the oldest e.mail addresses on the net and get anywhere from 2000 to 500 spam mails per week.

It is a matter of simplicity not upset.

Well targetted mail does not bother me.

Anyone without a team should not be subjected to advertisement. They are adults and can go look at the "Team Recruitment Center" if they wish or they can specifically ask for team selection help.

It's just nicer like that!

1:
People who do not object to things rarely let the fact be known. It is the objectors who are quick to stand and be counted.

2:
Spam would imply that these are mass mailings. As far as I know (I could be wrong as I have not tried) PM's have to be entered individually.

3:
As stated by kenzieB, "2 or 3 a day". Is this really a FLOOD of mail and don't you think the flood will stop when the novelty of the PM system wears off? Is anyone getting MORE than this?

Again I urge you to report anyone who persists in REPEATEDLY sending unwanted mail but I hardly think this issue garners a new rule system for people to fight about.

Just my

Sorry to the guy who tried to recruit me into his/her team via PM: Since no other message was coming with it, and it was entirely only about team recruiting, I simply deleted this message - don't try it again, it will be deleted again. :-|

The PM I was referring to came from a person I never talked with before (as far as I know), and was as personal as such advertisement snail-mail letters sent to each mailbox pretending to be a "personal invitation". It obviously was just copy&paste. No need for that.
@ Pawly: copy&paste IS possible in the PM's

I discussed with some people some things via PM, giving me maximum of 6, 7 PM's a day - but this stopped when the subject didn't need to be discussed anymore, or I offered another way to reach me off board.

Maybe. But if this results in, or appears to result in, more "spam," then we can also think that we brought the problem to light, suffered briefly for it, and then helped find a solution. Hopefully, though, there'll be no "spam" increase.

Fair enough, How do you feel about points #1 and #3

I'm not trying to be a jerk, just curious. This is a discussion forum and discussions usually have differing viewpoints.

I agree.
And, as I said, it's what seems to be the evolving etiquette and, even if formalized a bit, should not be regarded as some immutable law.
I think you missed the BOTD thread debacle from 8-9 months ago. There was a clear case where, at least in this forum, people who object and people who do not object will both speak up, quite loudly, and people will even join in just because their friends are speaking up, or because they want to oppose an "enemy." I am actually surprised the Sarge-haters aren't in here posting against me. ;)
As for (3), I think it has been more that lots of different people have received messages like these than a few individual people getting lots. ???

Good Post! To bad we don't have the +/- here but as you eluded too, the various camps would begin warring. Too much of that is in the background already.

I'm ALL FOR etiquette, But think there needs to be a distinction between REAL SPAM and a Personal Invitation in regards to Recruitment.

I get a fair amount of what I call Spam: mostly kindly folks trying to get me to join their teams.

It has gotten to the point where I have a standard reply in my notepad and I just cut and paste my thanks-but-no-thanks.

Consider yourself popular! I sure don't get any of those. LOL

That's because you have a team. We see Kenzie as vulnerable... Don't worry everyone, I sent her some spam. TFFE!!!!!
