I think that BOINC should be integrated into Windows so that it would run always and in many computers in the world. There are only about one milloin BOINC users. Imagine how many computers and how many Windowses there are. Imagine how many dual-core/quad-core computers sitting idle.

Windows setup could ask e-mail address and use that when attaching to a BOINC project. The user wouldn't have to do anything... Of course, there should be an option to disable the BOINC.

Is this a useful idea?

I have a bad feeling that Microsoft wouldn't support this idea...

It's kind of a nice idea but doubt the world is ready for that yet.

I suspect if MS didn't have control over what was being crunched and the way the sofware developed I doubt they would add it.

I can't see why it couldn't be added as a third party piece of software to any windows installation CD but that would be me dreaming :)

Has anyone asked Bill Gates if he actually BOINCs himself???

I guess though you have hit on a larger question as to whether BOINC or SETI exploit markets that already exist or ride on the wave of popular interests...

Internet cafe's could be a good place to exploit. 6 to 30 PC's on for 8 hours per day, totally networked and often just using 10% of capacity!

Could the SETI or BOINC network actually cope with any more users logistically or cost wise?

Another nice idea, one I think is much more manageable, is that the BOINC Manager checks when an update is available AND TELLS YOU, so you do not have to keep looking at the front page of this project.
Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes.
