Nope, I'm not a programmer, only a user and Administrator, maybe someone else can help you with some strange behaviors of this strange OS :), on a mailing list: FreeBSD mailing lists, especialy on freebsd-hackers PS Thanks to your dedicated work for the Cause |

[ From what I see latest version of ICC in ports is 8.1.038 ICC on FreeBSD. Maybe you can contact with netchild, he is the last mantainer of this port and may provide some help to you. From what difficulties I have in a these years with FreeBSD, I can say only good things to community around, support for a free OS is very important... |

I allready got it an it compiled the most important part of the code. (I allready did a GCC compilation, but i guess If ya can get a faster app... why use crapy gcc ;) So don't worry we/i can take care of it. I did port the code to Alpha and itanium, guess i can handle BSD too ;) hehe ... And if anything goes wrong ... there's allways Josef W. Segur you can rely on him !! He's been a major, if not the most contributing person towards optimizing the code !!! For those that did not know... He's responcible for the performance boost of the stock app. that became the 5.12 official app. !!! Before that the 5.07 code that should have been released as 5.11 was 3 times slower !!! (NOW TELL ME WHO KNEW THAT ???? ) ANYONE THAT USES AN OPTIMIZED APP. AND EVEN USES THE STOCK APP. OWES HIM SO MUCH !!!! JOSEF W. SEGUR IS OUR HERO ! Join BOINC United now! |

I am with hiamps. We (crunchers) don't know how many people is behind optimising stock Seti client. If Josef Segur was not in Chicken's group, it should be unknown to us... Thanks, and I'll be pleased if "Power of FreeBSD Serve to Us"! |

But SSSE3 is not listed in the list as something his CPU is capable of. Is this a type that BOINC normally does not recognize? [ My emphasis added ] And that is very important. Programs must only utilise what the host OS knows about. Even if the CPU supports SSSE3, if WinXP doesn't know about that then to use that feature may well leave the CPU registers scrambled if the OS decides to force a context switch... But SSSE3 is not listed in the list as something his CPU is capable of. Is this a type that BOINC normally does not recognize? I think you're being overly cautious. The instruction which saves the state of the XMM registers would be used for any context switch, and there's no conflict as there is between FPU and MMX which share the same register set. My guess is that MS simply wants people to buy newer machines so their income from Windows keeps coming in. Joe |
