My real question on the ghost units is what is going to happen to them. I have a couple of ghosts that wingmen have returned results for. I hate the fact that they will be waiting until my ghosts time-out before the WU is re-issued to get credit for them. But I can't think of a way to flag them as ghosts- can SETI somehow tell which are ghosts? Boinc Button Abuser In Training >My Shrubbers< |

But I can't think of a way to flag them as ghosts- can SETI somehow tell which are ghosts? They would time out and get reissued eventually. I got a heck of a lot on one host so I detached and reattached [As the hosts had no remaining up/downloads waiting], This had the effect of immediately marking them as 'Client Detached' AND Reissuing them to other users ...(Hopefully they won't get them as ghosts!) [P.S. This Host Just got 20 shiny NEW workunits!!! :D ] Now I guess I'll wait a while then Re-Chicken my Box !!!!! "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. I agree with what Jason said, you can get all your ghosts marked as "Client Detached" BUT Back up your BOINC folder first. The \\Program Files\\BOINC\\projects\\setiathome.berkeley.edu is deleted if you detach. Some of the files in \\Program Files\\BOINC\\ are also deleted. statistics_setiathome.berkeley.edu is probably the most important one to back-up, otherwise you will start without any statistics. Your Host ID is retained when you re-attach, at least if you re-attach immediately. I was concerned about this when I did a detach/re-attach as I have an ID which I like, hostid=3001110 for my primary PC. Sir Arthur C Clarke 1917-2008 |

How can I tell the difference between a ghost WU and a real WU? |

How can I tell the difference between a ghost WU and a real WU? It's not a ghost if you can see it on your own PC, in BOINC Manager (either in work/tasks or in transfers). 'Ghosts' are results you can see on this website as 'In progress', but are nowhere on your local machine. |

How can I tell the difference between a ghost WU and a real WU? Technically it's a Ghost "Result" and real "Result". The WorkUnit consists of the quota of 4 SETI Results sent to 4 different hosts. When a Result lapses (for whatever reason), another is sent out if 2 successes have not yet been reported. The Ghost does not appear in your "Tasks" page and never gets processed until it reaches it's deadline, unless it is aborted or the project is detached. Hope this helps to explain. |
