Message 563793 - Posted: 9 May 2007, 17:23:01 UTC

Is there a thread or forum for people wanting to recycle computer equipment within the SETI or BOINC network?

For example I have quite a few 56KB modems that I could sell on eBay but I'd be even happier giving away to a cruncher.

I was wondering if people thought a country specific thread (EG: "SWAP & RECYCLE - UK, US, FRANCE.. etc..) might be of use?

Participants could list the item, give their contact details, location & post code and whether the item was a pick-up, postable, swap based or a free item..

I'm sure there would be some problems to iron out but would this be a good idea?

Personally I think it would be a great idea. I thought there was a thread floating around in the NC forums about the same thing a while back, but its been a while. LOL But I like the idea.

Try http://www.freecycle.com

That link sends people to a bad advertising site..

Try this link uk.freecycle.org..

I am aware of these folks (Birmingham-UK has quite a big group.).. In my city they're almost run by the same people as the 'hearts' for 'work' brigade... (No offence meant.)

T'was just a thought as I have loads of bits I'm about to chuck out.

Wot yer got?

Are you in or around Brum (B31. 1AD. UK)?

I can post smaller stuff but big stuff need picking up.

Leads, cables, router, 17" tft (older) screen - but no PSU, dual cpu PC (2x700?), modems, 14" CRT,... bits & pieces.. Some whacky bits..

Are you looking for something?

Not sure what I can say.....

I was hoping for a more community based agreement even if it took a thousand years.

What country is your forum meant for?..

I suspect I've exiled myself again... oh poo I hate me :-(((

Might be better to keep the trade here...offsite things are not appealing to many people.

I have a bird-thing with wings that go round and round in the wind, but it keeps falling off my gazebo and gets in the way of my mower. Could be adapted to utilize wind power to run the LEDs on a PC - electrical wiring/bulbs/solar panel/transformers not included. Free to collect from Surrey, England.

OK I kind of react easily. I don't own this idea..

Bob... Forgive me for reacting and thank you for making the idea happen.

It's not up to me but I was hoping we had a few more responses before even trying to make anything happen..

Folk will do as they will but I'd still like to keep a (region specific?) "Swap or Recycle" thread here in or around the SETI board..

I'd love to see things given for free or some items swapped not for profit. I would accept that sometimes postage costs are correct but I was hoping my suggestion never meant a place for us to sell our bits....

R/C is probably correct in that here in the forum we gain most trust and can enjoy the interaction...

Again it's not up to me... but I'll leave it up to others..

Maybe if you placed the 240V AC wires each side of your helmet and put the wings each side of your buttocks your mower would bond with your gazebo and you would be the first looney on Mars...

Who lets these crazy English people from Surrey called ICE in here??? :o)~

OK So ICE said: Anyone in the UK want to camp out in his yard until he gives out his bird-thing? He say's you can stay until item adapted and has the wind... Sounds like a nice Surrey holiday - beans and all??? Any takers? HeHe.. HoHo...

I'd love to see things given for free or some items swapped not for profit.

A few years ago I met someone who was collecting old computers, screens and servers etc etc from companies who were throwing them out, despite still working with months or years of life left in them. (Did you know that IT contributes more to the CO2/Global Warming problem than all of the world's airlines put together?)

He was going to set up town-sized "local community" networks, based on cheap phone-modem access, giving computers away free to those who couldn't afford to buy (or giving them away free to anyone who wanted them since anyone with money would probably buy a new PC rather than put up with a year or two old one).

People would then advertise (for free) the things they didn't want, and others (for free) could come to collect them.

These local communities were supposed to spread up all over the country and the world, fueled by companies/anybody donating unwanted computer kit and volunteers setting it up for nothing and people generally using and supporting such an initiative to help each other out recycling for the benefit of all.

I haven't seen it happen yet and I hope people here who say they support such ideas actually DO something about it.

I know it can happen because I have been involved in giving and even sometimes receiving without payment..

I have faith that there are far more people who choose to give than there are that don't...

a bit of George Eliot:

"for the growing good of the world is partly dependent
on unhistoric acts, and that things are not so ill with
you and me as they might have been is half owing to the
number who lived faithfully a hidden life"

Let's see...

Anyone have any computer (or other) items they want to swap or give away??

More of my clutter on offer:

UK Only
-------

50ish various Computer Magazine software CDs (No magazines though).

Might be something interesting on there. Most are from 1999 to about 2002. Applications are mixed shareware & freeware.

Pickup the lot from B31 or can post out in smaller lots of 10 or so without the jewel cases. (Just the CDs and the printed inserts.)

It's pot luck which CDs you get. Free P&P. I want my cupboard space back.

Any takers?

I have 2 (possibly 3 if I can find the other one) 700Mhz Slot 1 CPUs.

These come out of an old HP AP400 that no one wants.

They all work well together and come with heatsinks.

Anyone think they can use these?

You will get 1 or 2 CPUs as you wish and if I find the third one and no one else wants it you will also get that.

Cost = Free. Postage cost only.

Also:
=======

Several 56KB win PCI modems. You find the drivers.

Cost = Free. Postage cost only.

PM me if interested in any of the above.

UK addresses only and no resellers please.

SNIP...

I'm trying to upgrade an old Dell Dimension 8100, P4 1.4Ghz. I bought a P4 2Ghz chip on Ebay.

Unfortunately it is a 478 pin model and I need a 423 pin version coded SL5SZ.

I will do a straight swop if anyone has a 2Ghz socket 423 one, or can negotiate a price. Happy to pay all postage/shipping etc.

Are you looking to make a new cruncher for yourself or an everyday PC for someone?

New cruncher for myself. 1.4 to 2.0 is not a lot but all helps.

Chris

I have a boxed and unused D915GLVG motherboard board or a 630 LGA775 chip.

They won't work together so don't ask :)

The chip should work but is untested by me.

My current PC manufacturer sold me out and never provided any BIOS updates so I have no use for this CPU.

If you can get either a chip for the mobo or a motherboard that works with a 630 LGA775 chip either one will be yours.

Let me know.

Cost is just postage but as these two things are slightly expensive we expect a photo of the new cruncher here on these boards..

Let me know if you find the needed other part.
