BOINC Manager can do it, but BoincView is much better. Does anyone know why BOINC Manager always saves the wrong password? I can access my other hosts, but always have to re-type the password as the one that has been saved is wrong. Sir Arthur C Clarke 1917-2008 |

I don't think it saves the wrong PW, it doesn't save it at all. Also it does not let you paste a PW in (neither does the attach dialog for that matter), which is kind of a pain if you're using good strong non-word PW's. I suppose it is more secure to force you to enter the PW every time, but then again if you don't have the account which has access to BOINC Manager secured what difference does that additional security protocol make? OTOH that's the way it's always been, so I don't hardly notice it anymore. ;-) Alinator |

Nevermind I figured it out. 1.) Switch to the Advanced view of the Manager. 2.) Select Advanced>Select Computer... from the menu bar. 3.) Complete the dialog with the host name (or IIRC IP Address. On Winboxes you don't need to add the double backslashes to the host name), and the GUI RPC password. You'll have to write it down from the gui_rpc_auth.cfg file in the main BOINC directory on the target host. 4.) Click 'OK' and the manager should then connect to the remote host. The main assumption here is you must have already set the target host up for remote management by starting BOINC with the: '-allow_remote_gui_rpc' switch on it. HTH, Alinator |

Nevermind I figured it out. I'm currently using BOINC 5.8.15 Boinc Manager talks to the BOINC client on your localhost on port 31416 by default, it can also use other ports. On the master I have BOINC Manager running, on my 2 slaves, I have just the BOINC client running. You need to set a password in "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" Just found this page while writing this answer. I know there are FAQ sites available as well. Someone else can probably answer better than me, I am still trying to get it to save my password correctly :-) [EDIT] Thanks for the reply Alinator, I assumed that the line of dots I see in the PW field of the "Select Computer" dialog box was a saved PW because if I just click OK that box changes to blank.[/EDIT] Sir Arthur C Clarke 1917-2008 |

Nevermind I figured it out. IIRC, the installer will create the file and generate a PW by default. You can use that one or replace it if you want. One word of the caution: Unless the machine you want to remotely manage is on a secured 'trusted' LAN (IOW behind a firewall, and you trust the other users on the LAN), I would recommend using a strong PW because in order to work BOINC will open a listening port on the remote host to receive the RPC requests on. Alinator <edit> @ Keith: Well if you figure out how to make the Manager save remote host PW's make sure to let us know. The last time I tried it looked to me like it was reading it directly from the PW file for localhost. That's why you don't have to enter it for the resident CC, but obviously you can't do that for the remote host. I mentioned this over on the BOINC forums eons ago when PW security came along, but nothing ever seemed to come from it. |

Nevermind I figured it out. I found the Wiki http://boinc-wiki.ath.cx/index.php?title=How_To_Control_BOINC_On_Remote_Computers. I will try setting the PW on all PCs to the same PW. At the moment they are different. Keith |

Hmmmm, that might do it! Good thought. One thing to watch out for is make sure you make a backup copy of the PW file in that case. If you do a clean install upgrade the uninstaller will delete PW file and then a new one gets created when you do the upgrade. I don't recall if upgrade overs are effected the same way. Personally though I think it would be better if they made so the 'Master' Manager just stored the unique PW's from security viewpoint. That way if one gets compromised, the others aren't by default. Of course the PW's are stored in the clear so that's kind of a problem in and of itself. ;-) Alinator |

I changed my master PW to match the 2 slaves and it worked, so BOINC Manager appears to only save it's local PW. Should have guessed that before. I will now make all 3 a strong PW. This will probably mess up the saved PW in BoincView, but that is easier to change and save. So in summary BOINC Manager PW saving does work if all client have the same password.
