Sorry for being a bit slow in picking this up, but I must say, all this talk of 5 mile wide UFO's because of the NASA footage is complete hogwash, and anybody that has fallen for it should be ashamed of themselves. If, as is highly debatable, the objects are indeed flying behind the tether, there is no way to accurately measure their size, even if they appear to be half the length of the 12 mile long tether.

As soon as the tether snapped it started wrapping itself up, it had been stored on a spool, so it had a tendency to coil anyway, so there's no knowing how long it was when you can see the "UFOs". But even if after it had travelled 70 or 80 miles it stayed outstretched there's still no way of putting a minimum size of the "UFOs", because we don't know the angle of inclination the tether had to the view point. We do know that it was initially perpendicular to the shuttle, but at 70 or 80 miles it had probably not stayed that way, even so the footage may only show something that is 1/2 mile wide at 80 miles, because the tether stretched from 74 to 86 miles.

Why would the NASA people say 70 or 80 or whatever miles, to give us an indication? Perhaps they had a fix on the satellite at the end, so it was this they were using as the measure, but for the entire tether to be at one distance it would have to curve around the shuttle, how would that happen?

So, the blobs/UFOs are probably not 5 miles wide.

As for passing behind/in front of the tether, I'm not an expert on the types of camera involved, nor the conditions under which the scene was filmed, though I find it strange that ground control talk about a lot of objects moving in the foreground and the astronauts only comment on debris. If there had been other objects out there I think the astronauts would have said something. Though, of course, you could argue that their training does not permit them to, and so the NASA conspiracy can survive a live broadcast. It's a shame that there are no stars visible to see whether the "UFOs" passed behind or in front of them.

Even guestimating with a 1/3 of the total length of the tether, allowing for coiling, I think I can safely be impressed with an object measuring 1.6667 miles in diameter.

Thx MrGray, this includes the conversation between Ground Control and the shuttle that I mentioned, At around the 1:30 mark:

Ground Control: "... we see a long line couple of star like things and a lot of things swimming in the foreground can you describe what you're seeing?"

Shuttle "Well the long line is the tether and there is a little bit of debris that kinda flies with us and it's illuminated by the sun at such low angles ..."

As for length of the tether I'll say it again, there's no way of knowing the angle of inclination, though it's almost certainly not sideways on to the shuttle (it started off perpendicular, i.e. heading directly away from the shuttle). So you're most probably looking at something long with one end much closer to you than the other. As there're no satellite at the end of the tether that broke there's no fix on it's position.

If you want a simple idea of what I mean close one eye (got to remove depth perception as the camera does not have it) and get a pencil, hold the pencil at arms length, turn the pencil along it's length so the point is directly at you (this represents how the tether started off with repect to the shuttle). Ever so slighly change the angle of the pencil so that it's not quite pointing at your head anymore, does the pencil look like its full 4 or 5 inches length? Does knowing the position of one end tell you where the other is? The only way that you know the size of the pencil is because you have your hand, arm and previous knowledge of it for reference, without the reference points you'd have no idea, and the same is true of the tether.
