Where did the North Pole go?

Map from 1885 from lib.utexas.edu:

Where did the North Pole go?

South for the winter? ;)
It may not be 1984 but George Orwell sure did see the future . . .

The link you provide simply states the area by the north pole is "unexplored".

I suspect you are asking why there is no ice at the north pole, is that correct?

If so, then the answer is that Google Earth does not show true pictures of the oceans except around land masses and other areas of interest. The ocean views are constructed from depth information collected by satellites, submarines and other sources. They are not true pictures as can be seen for land masses. That's why you only see the ice on and near land masses, such as Antarctica and Greenland. Look at the oceans in general and that will become obvious, you can't really see to the bottom from space :-)

Since there is no land at the north pole, you don't see the ice.

Wow,

I was ready to jump on the global warming band wagon with both feet...

Maybe I should write Google again and ask em to put in some fake ice since it's less work than the fake oceans. I'm sure there are a few thousand school kids out there wondering the same thing.

Thanks Mray

Speaking of schoolkids, I've heard that GE has gotten some flak from kids (actually their parents) about their kids not being able to find Santa's workshop at the north pole :-)

I've heard there's an add-on that puts Santa's place back on the map. Don't have any more info on that though.
