Um I've already tried it at 1 and at 2,0.1,0.2, and all sorts of combinations. If I have to detach from seti everytime I want new work, I suppose, its no biggie. I still get back the credit ect...Just seems weird.

I see you keep manually trying to force it to fetch work. What happens if you leave BOINC run and fetch work on it's own when it calculates that it needs to? Do you truly run out of work with nothing to process?

Perhaps I'm using Boinc incorrectly? I'll explain.. Because I find it easier (I'm on a dial-up connection), I'm trying to use Boinc in same way the old Seti used to run. Namely, I suspend network activity and wait until all WU have been completed. Once I see that Boinc has finished all WU I then connect and upload the work. I'm under the illusion that I will also recieve my next batch of WU and as you can see this is proving difficult. If I had lots of cash I would just tick the boxes to allow Boinc to connect whenever it needed to... But I'm afraid that after using PC's for many years I also know they are liable to error and I cannot afford a huge connection bill if it fails to disconnect.
Although after I downloaded the last lot of work (which you saw I recieved only after detaching). I left Seti to run but forgot to set my network activity to suspend. I'd left the setting on 'connect based on preference's'. When I came back to work on the PC, Boinc told me it had been trying to connect and fetch more work (which it couldn't because of the settings I'd ticked..). Do settings in preference's take time to filter through? Thanks for your help :)

Well, see the thing is... BOINC usually has an exceptional work scheduler and fetch routine that works well the majority of the time.

Tell us that BOINC doesn't need more work (and for some reason doesn't feel like it needs to report completed work). BOINC may erroneously think this due to a few different factors. Answering John McLeod VII's questions will help determine if there are factors contributing to this problem.

Maybe next time you go online to report work, if you have a few minutes, instead of manually forcing an update, try waiting to see if BOINC will automatically do it on it's own.

Though, remember that if BOINC thinks it has enough work in the cache (even if it's completed a workunit or two), it may not want to report the work until it feels it needs more. You may also want to wait until your computer finishes a few more workunits (or even wait for BOINC to complain that it needs to connect) before trying to report/download more.

OK, given that, what is your setting for "do work while computer is in use?" If it is no, then this could be a problem as BOINC would get almost no time at all.

10 hours a week should be enough time to get things done before deadline if yu have a decent machine, but, it is going to spend a large amount of time in Earliest Deadline First as it is not getting very much time.

When I'm not running S@H I would normally turn the PC off after finishing work, gaming ect. Now I've got S@H back, I leave it on that little longer for seti to do its thing. So I make sure that it does get to run at the above times.. Sorry this is getting convoluted!I'm running an AMD X2 3800+ with DDR2 800MHz 2x512 RAM and slightly overclocked. Might I make a suggestion? I do have 3 WU to complete (well 2 actually, one is already finished), I'll finish the remaining work and see how I get on with the upload ect. If I get the same probs I'll contact you again?

If you touch the mouse or keyboard, it counts as activity, and BOINC shuts down for a few minutes.

This is a result of the ‘Work while active? No’ setting. I suggest that when you’re making a connection, you set the Activity menu to “Run always”. That way you can switch between panes in BOINC Manager to monitor what it’s doing, without bringing everything to a halt whenever you move the mouse. Once the transactions are complete and your management session is over, you can set the menu back to “Run based on preferences” for background crunching.
