I installed SETI on a new computer with a dual core (Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80 GHz). It makes two modules at the same time, but… also much of noise, because the ventilators turn to full mode without stop. Friends have the same problem with dual core. Do you know a solution? What can one make? |

This isn't a problem on dual core only machines, but is inherent in all machines. See, every project you join is designed to take over all your spare CPU cycles on the lowest priority (meaning that everything you do on your computer will take precedence over what the projects are doing). The side effect of this is that the CPU is always running at 100%, thus giving off more heat, and therefore the fans need to work harder to remove that heat from the system (causing them to spin up and become louder). Right now, there is no permanent solution. BOINC v5.8 should be coming out soon which will limit CPU usage to whatever you specify (as low as 1% of your total CPU power). Otherwise, you can tell BOINC to only use one core of your dual core, thus limiting it to 50% of your total CPU power and giving off 50% less heat (which means the fans won't have to kick in as hard). |
