Hi everyone, This is a thread for general chat about Admiral Marith's laptop being stolen.

Try to keep the Admiral's Thread Clear of general chit chat so that he only gets information that is helpful to him.

If you are good with computers and the settings preferances for seti, DO offer help to the Admiral in his thread.

If he gets his laptop back that thread could be used as a news story to help seti@home get some well deserved press coverage.

Just to clarify, i live in Ireland and the Admiral lives in Minniapolas. And i did not fly over and nick his laptop. LOL

Aye, really looking forward to hear if they manage to get it back. As far as I got Eric this has happened in the future. This could indeed result in nice press coverage, helping the project. Please feel free to repost your headline-suggestion from the other thread, John ;)

Alright, alright already! I misread that. LOL

The Admiral lives in Minniapolas? It's all Greek to me! And though you act the part of the innocent shoemaker, I wouldn't put it past you to steal his laptop by remote access, Leprechaun! :-P

This is the Letter that i am sending to the Newspappers and TV stations in Ireland and Britian.
------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a very good News Story if you might be interested in carrying the story as a light hearted News clip.

My name is John and I have been involved in the “seti@home” project for a while now. Seti@home is a computer program that runs in the background on your computer. It uses your computer’s spare capacity to listen to the background noise coming from space to see if we can detect radio signal’s transmitted by other life in the Universe.

Seti@home has a chat message board where people running the program can chat about science and other seti@home issues.

On the 7th of January, one seti@home participant who lives in Minneapolis, USA had his wife’s computer laptop stolen in a break in on his home. The computer was running the seti@home program in the background. The thief who stole the computer did not know this and happily went home and plugged in his new stolen laptop. As soon as he plugged it in to the phone line, the computer sent its usual results back to Berkley University in California, just as it is programmed to do.

The seti@home participant’s user name for the project is “Admiral Marith”. When Admiral Marith logged on to his account, he could see the details of the ISP (internet service provider) where the stolen computer was now being used. But the thief had no idea of this. So Admiral Marith went to the Minneapolis Police Department and told them the story.

Within a few days the Police had gotten a subpoena issued for Qwest in Minneapolis, the service provider, to give out the address of the thief. So on Monday 22nd, the police got the written reports from Qwest Communications and a judge issued a search warrant. The police then recovered the stolen laptop to the delight of its owner.

Feel free to copy the letter and forward it to any Newspapper, magazine or TV station you know of.

The letter is worded so it is general and can be personalised by any media person.

If you contact a newspaper or tv station, you must give where YOU live and some contact details or they won't publish what you send them. They can't by Law.

Help is needed to get this story out !

MODERATOR NEEDED !

More help needed. This is an unusual request but it might help to get this story published.

Will someone with the ability to DELETE messages go into the Admiral's thread and delete the messages that are just general comments and are not realy part of the story.

This will shorten the thread and make it readible for a media person who is not fimilar with seti or message boards.

I know that many messages in there have good sentiment in them, but this would be a great help to this project.

Care is needed to only delete the messages that are not relivant !

Good idea, John. I think the posts should be moved here, rather than deleted. I've already suggested in the thread that my rough draft and related comments be moved over here.

If I may make a suggestion: if the Admiral is willing to have this story put into play on the media, a good way to do is to work up the draft story or john's letter and contact the local Minneapolis and St. Paul newspapers. They might be particularly interested because it's also a local story which rightly praises their local police force efforts. The majors may (or may not) simply pick up the story from there, but it helps if it's published somewhere.

What exactly would you consider the " general comments " to be???

Give me the post numbers via email at knightmare_rush@yahoo.com

If I get them before I go to sleep. I will move them to this thread or just remove them. :-)

Beethoven that is a brillant idea !

Will you work on that ?

Remember, your details need to be sent or they won't publish. Your e-mail and phone number should be on what ever you send. And your City or town.

ACK!!! I am gonna be moving posts for HOURS...lol

* This is not being asked because I am lazy * Wouldn't part of the story be the concern of the other crunchers?? I think it would show how much of a community we really are if the thread showed that peole continued to ask for updates on what was going on. Might make for even better publicity when someone from the media sees what kind of group we are. Just a thought. :-)
