I have SETI installed and would like to use the screensaver but, whenever it starts, it just flashes up for an instant and then disappears. Can anyone advise on what the problem might be? I have tried uninstalling/ re-intalling but the same thing happens

Chris,

Are you using Windows standard SCR? What time have you set for starting the SCR?

I have just set it as the screensaver by means of 'control panel' (you will gather that my IT skills are somewhat limited). I have set it to come on after one minute. What happens is that, after the minute of inactivity, the SETI screen flashes up and then disappears. If I leave the pc alone, it does this after each minute (hope that makes sense).

I did not know that we SETI can work as a SCR. I will try it and I will come back to you.

Chris,

I can't activate SETI as SCR on my PC, but it doesn't matter. You choose any type of scr file as a screensaver,(NOT SETI) for instance WINDOWS start screen. You set it to 1 minute to activate(don't touch your mouse) just wait patiently. In the energypart of your pc is a possibility to set when the screen shall go down. Is that part activated? I have 20 minutes, after that period goes my screen off.

Sorry, I probably didn't explain this very well. The screen doesn't go blank (as I imagine it would with a energy saving setting) it just reverts to whatever was on the screen before the screensaver came on. I am doubly puzzled because I had the SETI screensaver set up on my last pc in exactly the same way and it worked fine and I have had it set on this machine and it worked fine until a few months ago. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that it is a work pc and they are constantly updading it. I suspect it might be some sort of conflict but I just can't understand why the screensaver pops up and is working fine but then, almost instantly disappears. Don't expend too much time on this, I just wondered if it was a common and easily remedied problem.

Chris,

I just read another remark in the message board about Classic SETI that worked as a screensaver. Do you by any chance using an old version?

I don't know. All I know is that, when I installed SETI it automatically appeared in the choice of possible screensavers in control panel (so I guess that it is intended to work as a screensaver) and that, as I said earlier, it does seem to work as a screensaver - it just turns itself off instantly!

Please don't trouble yourself any further over this. As I said earlier, I hust wondered if it was a common problem. I suspect that my work maching is set up in such a way as to generate some sort of conflict with this so I doubt if it will work no matter what I do. Thanks for your help anyway.

best wishes

chris

What is your go to blank screen setting set to (assuming that it is a blank screen it is going to)? If it is not a blank screen, what is showing? What do you have "do work while user is active" set to?

Hello,
time to saver: 1 minute -> time to blank 5 minute (inside boinc-saver)
the animation starts for 1 second - then it goes back to Windows desktop...

I have a similar problem and am not sure if I just haven't done everything properly. My screensaver will show the BOINC symbol and says it is currently idle. Can anyone help ?

This is a different problem. You do not have BOINC running before the screen saver starts. The screen saver does not start the BOINC daemon if it is not already running.
