"Their detailed maps show the ‘local’ cosmos out to a distance of 600 million light years, identifying all the major superclusters of galaxies and voids. They also provide important clues regarding the distribution of the mysterious ‘dark matter’ and ‘dark energy’ which are thought to account for up to 96% of the apparent mass of the Universe.

new maps are based on the observation that, as the Universe expands, the colours of galaxies change as their emitted light waves are stretched or “redshifted”. By measuring the extent of this redshift, astronomers are able to calculate approximate distances to galaxies."

Is there a site where you can view the 3D map in more detail?.
It did not say in the article.

Tiare, I see you have question marks around four terms. I believe that dark matter and dark energy are things that can't be accounted for just yet. They seem to pull things around without being detected. Since your map goes out to only 600,000,000 light-years and our universe goes out past 10,000,000,000 light-years, that map would be a local one. Redshifting is just applying the Doppler effect to light waves instead of sound. When that train goes by, its whistle seems to drop in pitch. If a blue object recedes from us at about 1/3 the speed of light, it will look red. I'm sorry that the developers of these forums haven't found a way to adapt them to Hispanic keyboards, yet. I hope they see this. Thanks for updating us on the status of the Square Kilometer Array. Now I know it's at least 12 years off.

Adam, I just downloaded the Celestia program and it is incredible. The
detail in it is amazing. Its very like NASA's World Wind. It is a bit like
learning to drive a car trying to use the program. I went back to the web site and there is loads of add on's to go with it. The add on's seem to go into even greater detail in 3D of everything that is in the sky.

I would highly recommend this program to anybody else who read's this message.
Here is a link to Celestia.

And Adam if you have space on your hard drive i would also recommend
NASA's World Wind.

Thanks for the tip

It's not so good for Australia, either. Looking for Alice Springs, the major city right in the centre of our continent is a lost cause. The place doesn't exist! Our largest city, Sydney, is also poorly covered.

Scotland, too, is very much unexplored by Google Earth. On the other hand, London is pretty well covered... at least, the part where I used to live! :)

I think I shall take a look at World Wind.

Have another look at GE...alice, now in great detail...the east and west macdonald ranges are fantastic. It seems they are upgrading their image library regularly cos you can now even see angaston in SA.
