win 98 v. 4.10.1998

Installed 4.06 over 4.05

Not bad. Did find tabs slow in response during download but it may be nothing.

1- incident

I am letting it go on the internet without the password again( dail-up)
to see if in this case any error show up.

In this case the pocessing of the wu stopped and I closed and restarted the gui
It went well after and still is.

Not 100% sure, but doubt that it has anything to do with the 4.06. Sounds more like a DNS problem from your isp providers site

Hi Fred (or anyone who knows) - I've downloaded both 4.06 files (I have Win98SE) & want to install them but I wanted to be sure about the .pdb files first. Once I install the main file it will start running & downloading work (hopefully) so do I need to do something with the .pdb files BEFORE installing the main file? Or should I install them after BOINC starts running? If I unzip the .pdb files first, would they go in c:\program files\boinc of 4.05 since there is no 4.06 folder yet?

These are the unzipped files, are they correct?

boinc_cli.pdb
boinc_dll.pdb
boinc_gui.pdb
boinc_scr.pdb

Also, I don't run command line or the screensaver, so is it necessary to put those particular files in the BOINC folder? Thanks.

Nice job Rom and everybody involved...

Just upgraded my two W98 machines to v4.06 and so far everything is working fine.

Keep it up and running ...

Hehehe. A lot of people have that reaction. However, my WinME system had been running without problems for four years (not 24/7) before this BOINC 4.05 problem wiped out the harddrive.

From prior discussions I've learned that the people who have had BADBADBAD experiences with WinME were those who performed an UPDATE from Win98 to WinME.

All of the people I talked to who did a CLEAN INSTALL of WinME to an empty system experienced NO problems (other than those normal to any Windows setup).

WinME isn't bad at all. It's DOS support is somewhat crippled, but that's all.

Hi

So far no need to install the debugging files. If Rom or the dev team asks for it, yes, then go ahead.

But if you were to install them, then in the same folder as 4.06.

Hope this helps m8

Ok, thanks for your help....has anyone (with Win98 or ME) had any problems with duplicate hosts resulting from the 4.06, or with duplicate projects in the projects tab?

I dont call "not bad" an OS that you can crash it with a simple C program:

int main () {
int* a=0;
(*a)++;
return (0);
}

and when you reset the PC, you risk to loose data on disk ...

Feedback for Rom:

GUI 4.05, on my Win98 system, kept hanging or crashing :( Even rendered the whole PC useless with an avalanche of exception error messages.

I downloaded 4.06 and it's been very stable since. That's for 7 hours now. No other problems - seems to be crunching fine now :)

Thanks

I suspect this is a server side problem, not a new problem
with 4.06. I have a 4.05 version running
on Windows 2003 since seti went to 4.05 and its been working fine, but is now giving the same errors as below.

OK, Thanks. I'm a little bit worried, because I watn to install new 4.06 on machines at the office tomorrow morning (8 AM CET) some are XP's, others 98's and 2003 server.

Many thanks to all BOINC Dev. team to solve this problem so quick :)

Best regards

I've been running 4.06 on six Win98SE boxes for about half a day with no hangs. This compares with half my machines hanging within an hour or two with 4.05.

Actually folks, most of the thanks goes too Walt Gribben for pointing us in the right place.

Without his help, it could have dragged on for days.

A lot of people seem to forget that many of us crunchers use as many machines as they can lay their hands on. Often these machines have older OS'ses installed it is therefore no argument to begin to argue to install another OS on such machines...they aren't simply worth the extra cost.
On my newer machines 2.4GHz and up I naturally do have the most recent OS installed.
In this thread many argue from the point of a couple machines, they quickly would change their minds if they had to buy XP pro for lets say 30 or more machines.... grin....
Therefore its good for the cause that older OS'ses are not dumped or forgotten.
Thanks to ROM for the quick support.

(no, everything on my own, no groups,...)
Greetings from Belgium ;-))

As long as there are thieves when one wants each lock can be broken... even XP pro.
