I noticed when I dusted off my linux drive and booted it up, opened the boinc manager and ran benchmarks, that they were almost exactly half of the benchmarks that I get on XP on the same computer. shouldn't it be the other way around, if any differance at all?

This is an ongoing problem with the linux version of BOINC that has not been resolved. The only solution at this time is to us a version of BOINC optimized for your particular processor type. It doesn't quite eliminate the difference but it significantly reduces it.

Given enhanced versions, does it really matter any more ? Are benchmarks needed anywhere?

Most projects still rely on benchmarks. The exceptions are SETI, Einstein, and now/soon Rosetta and coming shortly QMC.

If I've missed any please post them here.

BOINC uses the Whetstone benchmark value in work fetch and maximum CPU time calculations, so that one certainly matters.

Is it just the benchmarks or will crunching a WU also take longer?

That depends on the project. It is all a matter of how optimized the programs are. The default Linux BOINC client is less optimized than the windows one. Project applications may be the other way around. I believe Einstein's old client was a lot faster in linux. Just depends how things were compiled.
