Message 391128 - Posted: 7 Aug 2006, 17:31:05 UTC

I have begun to upgrade some of my cpu's to 5.4.11 the upgrade is great. But every time I do a new install when I attach to the account is comes back with the message that Attach to Project failed. But it really attached just fine. Did this on 5 out of 5 times. Just thought I would let you know

I don't understand something. When I upgrade to a newer boinc version, I just stop boinc, then run the install program. Adding/removing Boinc in and of itself doesn't detach you from any project. To detach is a seperate action. Removing boinc still leave the boinc folder, and most it's files untouched. Including project files and results. How did you become detached?

I better learn to slow down and read more carefully, sorry.

When you do a new install, do you actually start from scratch, or do you copy the directories and then install boinc?

Is your network connection enabled when you try to attach to a project? I had the problem you described when i tried to attach to a project while having network connection disabled. Though a failure was reported attaching was successfull. I reported that quite a while ago on the boinc dev forum. I thought this was sorted out till now.

Yes. It in reality attaches fine, does the cpu benchmark, dl's one WU and begins to process....while...the failure to attach message is on the screen. Just did another cpu now. did the same thing

too funny

Just did another new install. Same thing. Message said "Failed to attach to project. Please see the Messages tab to see the error."

As before. It attached fine and there doesn't seem to be an issue. but there is actually a message in the log. Go firure. I am at a loss here.

Has anyone checked if the Crtl-C bug (when running in command line mode) has been fixed?

I know 5.4.9 doesn't toggle properly after pausing.

I'm not seeing an error is that message log that isn't normal. Are you signed up for BAM or other AMS. perhaps it's automatically attaching your hosts, AND you're doing it manually, so it's trying to do it twice and give you the "failed to attach" message? How exactly do you do a new install?

perhaps you could edit the old message and use BBcode tags to make the suspect message red. Use; [color=red ]then message here [/ color]. Omit the extra space I placed after "red" and then before "color" so that it would display the code.

and BOINC was never installed on this CPU before
(the old classic ver 3.08 was though) But I havn't seen this cpu in a long while. LOL

ok here's how I do a NEW install

1) connect to my work share
2) open coltrol panel
3) create a password for the account
4) minimize control panel
5) run the boinc from the share (ver 5.4.11 now)
**trying to remember from memory here**
6) bypass the windows xp warning about .exe file type I think
7) select run as cervice and all of the default install directories
8) for attach to project I put "setiathome.berkeley.edu"
9) then is prompts for the account
10) I select existing user
11) I type in "worwizard@aol.com"
12) I type in the password
13) I get error message LOLOLOLOL

am I the only one???

P.S. Thanks for the color info. I think I screwed something up there though. oops

Are you using BAM or AMS?

on the next install, watch the message tab. Boinc will install and at that time there is no project attached, it's just a manager, NO projects, then when you attach you get the attached message that you see later on.

How are you attaching to projects? using the Attachment wizard?

You know something. I did register to BAM a few ago but I thought that was only for the stats. Can that effect my account?

I don't know what AMS is. Can you elaborate?

I've got to be honest, I've NEVER used it. As I understand it, it's a "one stop" attachment service for all your listed projects. I don't know if it automatically attached you to Seti after it got these lines:

8/7/2006 5:01:57 PM||This computer is not attached to any projects
8/7/2006 5:01:57 PM||Visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu for instructions
8/7/2006 5:02:10 PM||Fetching configuration file from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/get_project_config.php

I don't know if that last line means it's checking your config and auto attaching you.

If someone else doesn't speak up, and you're doing a new puter, just hold off on the Attachment wizard and see if you don't get automatically attached by BAM.

How could that happen if it (the new cpu) doesn't know who I am yet? I only get the error after putting the account information.

I am starting to feel quite stupid here

5) run the boinc from the share (ver 5.4.11 now)

Just to be clear....

You're running the BOINC installer from the share, not running BOINC.EXE from a network directory used by other machines also running BOINC?

Had the same error on a new install (virgin computer). Says it failed, but it still attached the project with no hangups.

Nope Just running the installer from the share. But I just tried it locally too and the same thing happened. I also just did an experiment. new build of win xp sp2. I installed 5.4.9 no problems. attached without a hitch. then I removed it and deleted the bionic directory from the program files directory and re installed the 5.4.11 and it did the same thing. it attached to the project but gave me a failure notice

here's the log file from the second new computer
