Message 404966 - Posted: 24 Aug 2006, 6:33:09 UTC - in response to Message 404858.

I see that two of your three systems are Win98,

I've had 2 Work Units on my Win98SE machine not start in the last week & i had to abort them. That's 2 Work Units in 2 years (or is it more than that now?)- hardly worth spitting the dummy over IMHO.

Heh. On my Win98 system in Beta I had the opposite problem: they didn’t stop when they reached 100%! Thanks to a tip from Joe I got them reported, but after that I suspended the project on that host; I’m just waiting for the next version to try out.

With two other systems getting the same error, that must be so.

Last two work units i ran ended with unrecoverable error... 'computation error'.
The one yesterday actually came up with a VBRuntime error from the windows.
The one today just said:
9/1/2006 3:24:32 PM|SETI@home|Unrecoverable error for result 28ap06aa.13817.2881.467332.3.14_1 (One or more arguments are invalid (0x80000003) - exit code -2147483645 (0x80000003))

I'm holding off downloading for a while.

This particular unit took more than twice as long as other typical units to crunch. I've only seen this odd one and none other. Hopefully it's just a startup problem with the rebuilt computer from CyberPower connected to SetiBoinc on September 1. Here is the result summary; notice that Simon's info is mentioned three times:

Message 414865 - Posted: 4 Sep 2006, 22:19:55 UTC - in response to Message 404858.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I've already shut it down. My point was that I don't just sit here waiting to see if a WU is going to run or not, so by the time I get around to finding out that it's a crap WU, I've wasted many hours of computing time on the piece of crap. Boinc s/w should be smart enough to abort these crap WU without intervention. Like I said, the software sucks.....we deserve better.

Better is available from http://www.zadra.org/seti_enhanced/index.php.

I see that two of your three systems are Win98, and it's certainly true the stock client has issues on Win9X. That situation should be much better with the next version. There are several of us with Win9X doing what we can in Beta Test to ensure that.

As to deserving better, the project people are doing what they can to improve things. It will take time.
                                                           Joe
[/quote]

Thanks Joe!

I have d/led the above and will give it a try. I did find that if I logged out of Windows and returned, the WU would then begin to run. I'm not sure why it stalled in the first place. The machine had just returned some finished WU's and was not being used at the time. Thanks for the info on Win9X as well. I just don't like giving MS more money, so I stay with what I already bought since it "should" work just as well for this application as anything else available.
Thanks again. I'll stay tuned to Zandras' website!

Allen

When computing this workunit, I got a Visual C Runtime Error out of the middle of nowhere (result). The log says "Der angegebene Pfad wurde nicht gefunden" which means "The given path was not found". Judging by the results of my co-crunchers, SETI should have exited gracefully at this point with a -9 overflow error, but it decided not to. Can anyone tell me why? Is this one of the mysterious issues with the BOINC client on Win9x?

Why is still a mystery, but that particular problem isn't restricted to Win9X. My impression is it only applies to the Windows build, though; I don't remember seeing any Linux or other OS reports. There were also two WindowsXP systems which errored on that WU and I believe their credit claims would have been like yours if they had been using BOINC 5.2.6 or later. The difference in error number is probably insignificant.

Unit o2my06ab.4663.28177.687074.3.78.1 at 1.68% completed at 12 hours and 48 seconds and completion time increasing. This unit was aborted.

Are we getting some sort of credit for these aborted units?

Why are they attempting to use a "Sun" System? The Sun crashed and it is now the "root" cause of this mess. No more work will be processed until they get the new "Sun" system back up and running. This is what I found out by reading their "tech" notes.
